The Wates Group team at the The British Library's site in Boston Spa has been doing lots of work with local schools in recent weeks. We’ve had a site visit from a group of students from Elliot Hudson College which combined a visit to the existing library, where they got an up-close look at the fascinating collections and mechanics there. This was followed by a tour of the construction site, where the new passivhaus (energy efficient) storage facility is being built. Students learnt about two very different types of businesses and the variety of jobs roles there are. It’s great to be able to work so closely with our client to benefit local young people. Thank you to the British Library for facilitating this event! Since then, we have hosted three fantastic students for their work experience. Maisy, Will and Ben have all spent time with the teams on site, learning about the different roles and how a principal contractor delivers a construction project. We’ve had brilliant feedback from students and teachers alike: “Thank you so much for the work experience given to Maisy. She has returned to school with so much confidence and is buzzing from her week with you all. It sounds like she was really made to feel a part of the team, thanks so much for this, we really appreciate the effort put into her week with you.” Well done to everyone on the British Library team led by Martin Burge and Chris James MCIOB, especially our Social Value Champions Jack Howson with support from Brian Cole MCIOB Cole and the team.

FAU's BREEZEWAY DIALOGUES: In an age when nearly everything feels politically charged and polarized, it is essential that we come together to dissolve the us vs. them construct and reaffirm our shared humanity through the fundamentals of civil discourse. The BREEZEWAY DIALOGUES series was established in the Summer of 2021 with this exact goal in mind: to provide FAU students the opportunity to discuss relevant and controversial topics while learning civil discourse best practices. https://lnkd.in/eAgBjycV)

The Three Streams Model has been long in the making and is starting to make real progress. The Department of Basic Education, provincial education departments and various stakeholders are convened today in Kempton Park to discuss progress. Articulation is a key component of the new model. Here are some ideas that flow from the 2020 Technical Working Group on Articulation. Well done to Moses Simelane and many other colleagues for being willing to engage with difficult issues and diverse views in this journey. https://lnkd.in/dz5TkGMe

🎉Congratulations to the brilliant team at Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate in York for their outstanding performance in the CityZen game. The Hullifiers team scooped third place for their top score! 367 teams took part in the digital game designed to inspire young people to follow a civil engineering career path. Participating students at QE said, ‘We found the competition fun although challenging at the same time as we were given scenarios that mirrored real-world problems. I would highly recommend CityZen to everyone who loves problem-solving.’ During the competition, students aged 16-18 played the CityZen digital game and submitted a video considering real-world factors such as budget, sustainability, and improving outcomes for people and communities. Rebecca Alderson, Science Super Curricular Coordinator at QE, said ‘Having participated in the last 3 years of CityZen, the buzz around the competition continues to strengthen year on year. It's great to see students working together from different subject disciplines and applying their knowledge to real like situations. The competition also develops employability skills such as team work, communication, time management and self-management, which students need to be work ready and in preparation for their future studies. I cannot recommend CityZen highly enough.’ Read more and find out the competition winners 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/eKsUWaYU

"Teacher Autonomy and Lesson Planning" is a new article just published in Volume 4 of Educational Abundance, the journal of the New York State Foundations of Education Association. Authored by Madhu Narayanan of Portland State University and Anne Shields of Bard High School Early College, the article explores how teachers’ felt sense of autonomy affects their lesson planning process. Despite its apparent benefits for teacher morale, autonomy is a complicated construct within education. Check out the article here, page 48: https://lnkd.in/g4uyK_z3

https://lnkd.in/g8dJD2H5 It is probably one of my favourite posts of 2024, so far. Education. Why it matters. Education for International Students in Australia. Why it matters. Working with some of the most brilliant designers in Australia and lecturing up-and-coming designers is an incredible privilege. It is a privilege to work for a company that was the head of online teaching when we were all forced to do it, ensuring the students had the best experience possible. We had been training to do it for 8 years before Covid hit us. It is a privilege to work for a company that sees lecturers as human beings who timetable and work around our other jobs, being a mum, partner, or running our businesses. It is also a privilege to work for line managers who will do anything to make other hiccups in life work with work. Many may also not know or see this: Our job is 24/7. We work on weekends and make ourselves available to the students in the evenings for one-on-one sessions if anyone needs them. It is not part of our job to do that, but we do it anyway. Having studied at 8 other universities, I know this is different. We do it because our students work equally hard. And when we see the result of this rather unusual lecturing method, with students scoring top jobs, we know what we do works.
The heartwarming story of Torrens University's first International student, Dele.

NDSU Restorative Practices Network invites you to participate in "Talking Circles" that is intended to help everyone express and reflect on their challenges, achievements, semesters and experiences within the campus. The goal is to create a more robust community where everyone feels they belong, accepted, heard, and acknowledged. Do not cover up or condone injustices. Be prepared to stand out, speak up, and never be afraid. Speaking up against injustices as a group increases awareness and puts pressure on people in authority. However, this is only one step in a complicated process that calls for structural reform, practical consistent action, and collaborative effort to fully eradicate them. Students session 4-5pm today, bring yourself, friends be ready to be vulnerable, it is okay to be emotional, bring tissues to wipe off your tears🫂 Event Details: Date: December 3, 2024 Time and Location: Faculty/Staff Talking Circle: Noon-1PM, Hidatsa Room (Memorial Union) https://lnkd.in/grbS7QQn Student Talking Circle: 4-5PM, Rose Room (Memorial Union) https://lnkd.in/gvHbSFUi #HigherEdJustice #NoMoreSilence #JusticeOnCampus #StudentsAgainstInjustice #FairHigherEd #ChangeTheSyst North Dakota State University
