Excited to share this TechCrunch article about some of the AI-powered content discovery features my team and I have been building! Huge thanks to Sureshmi (Sue) Shlapakovsky for empowering us to innovate for Audible’s listeners and to Katarina (Belinicher) S. for her hard work in helping make our vision a reality. So proud of what we’ve accomplished together!
Wow! This recommendations feature combined with recently released Maven AI search assistant really raising the actionable quality of content discovery across Audible's distinctive catalog. Well done team! In my own use, enjoying and delighting in the high relevance, accuracy, and completeness of the interaction results from these discovery tools so far.
Kudos to HarperCollins for coming at least halfway off the AI fence with its ElevenLabs partnership.
"HarperCollins emphasizes that this partnership will not replace their commitment to voice actor-led productions, which remain an essential part of their current audiobook creation strategy. Instead, text-to-speech technology will be used as a complementary tool to enable the production of audiobooks for backlist series books in non-English markets."
ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski optimistically says, "Now, every author can see their work come to life in audio, and readers can be offered more choice, dissolving the linguistic barriers of content."
But for that to happen, publishers will have to fully climb off the AI fence and have frank discussions with authors and translators about what AI can bring to the table.
Thus far I'm not seeing that happen.
Thad McIlroy touched on this recently, in direct reference to HarperCollins -
https://lnkd.in/euQtHnUp
- so its interesting to see HarperCollins take the lead in breaking the commitment barrier for the "non-English markets."
Now HarperCollins needs to come out and say that while its commitment to "voice actor-led productions" remains strong, it would be beyond stupid as a business to ignore what AI can do for the core English-language backlist the company is sitting on.
Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp had previously admitted (LBF24) the company was "experimenting with using AI translation to produce audiobooks for select backlist titles that might benefit from being sold in territories for which the company held rights, but where audiobooks are not available."

So it looks for now like "non-English markets" will be the safe experimental playground trade publishers are going to opt into to hone their AI tools, without having to worry too much about their core authors and translators screaming betrayal.
When what they really need to be doing is sitting said authors and narrators down with soothing cups of chamomile tea and explaining that, unless they are celebrities, the future of audiobook publishing is going to be hybrid whether they like it or not.
And that it's in everyone's best interest to embrace the possibilities and opportunities unfolding, not resist them.
