Conference of Parties. Cartel of Oil Producers? China Omni Potent? It is easy to be cynical, because, underneath the surface, COPs remain essential. 158: COP29 is supposed to be the “Finance COP”, whatever that means, but all major head of states will not participate. Are COP still useful? Is it the correct format? Who is really committed and who is just paying lip service to fighting Climate Change? Those questions and more with Lord Adair Turner, chair of the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) a global coalition of companies committed to achieving a net zero global economy by 2050. Lord Turner is a leading British businessman and academic, former Chairman of the Financial Services Authority (2008-13). From 2008-2012 Lord Turner was the first chair of the UK’s Climate Change Committee. 159: Chaos, Shock and Hope Live in Baku to discuss with Bruce Douglas, CEO Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) and tireless promoter of Renewable Energy. Bruce is the one who coined the famous “Triple Renewables” rallying cry, and has been rewarded by joining the precious list of TIME 100 Climate leaders. COP in a few words: Shambolic, Rudderless and Essential nevertheless. The world of renewables is at the centre stage, dealing with diplomats who are doing politics without a calculator while policy makers are busy inventing more alphabet soup concepts while ignoring geopolitics. COP is the summary of the world’s contradictions. COPs are useless and irreplaceable at the same time.

"GOD GIVEN GAS" It was verging on the criminally negligent for Azerbaijan to be given the honour of hosting COP29 and that chicken is already coming home to roost. We already had a complete mockery of the COP process unravel in Dubai when the president of that COP said there was no science to suggest phasing out fossil fuels will limit global warming to 1.5C and then there were the reports of fossil fuel company meetings going on in the background of the conference. Now we have the president of Azerbaijan asserting that COP29 won’t stop his county investing in ‘God-given’ gas. COP29 will be car crash. It will further the aims of the fossil fuel industry and push us back into the dark ages. Azerbaijan intends to profit from the war in Ukraine and 'help out' Europe by supplying us with more gas. This is ludicrous when the issues with malevolent control over energy supplies are evident to everyone and SHOULD be resulting in a deep dive into renewables. Fossil fuel energy resources are totally controlled by the countries in which they are based. We, in Britain, have again and again squandered our chance to lead in renewable energy. We have ignored our biggest most reliable source Tidal Power even though a Government Study has concluded this area could produce 20GW of power in the UK - at this precise moment as I write this post that is nearly 60% of our entire current energy usage and 3GW more than all our renewable energy production! It is also reliable and predictable and will 'keep the lights on' when the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining. In Britain we must lead the way. We need to invest and innovate in tomorrow's technologies. We need to lead the new clean industrial revolution and become not "a superpower" in only "clean energy" but "THE superpower" in all of tomorrow's technology - ALL of it! We can do this but need to move decisively, as advocated by The Climate Party, bringing forward our net zero target by decades and galvanising the entire economy to win this race, grow a trade surplus into the 2030s and 2040s and give hope, optimism and prosperity to British people. COP29 host Azerbaijan set for major fossil gas expansion Azerbaijan, the host of the Cop29 global climate summit, will see a large expansion of fossil gas production in the next decade, a new report has revealed. The authors said that the crucial negotiations should not be overseen by “those with a vested interest in keeping the world hooked on fossil fuels”. The report, produced by Urgewald and CEE Bankwatch, found Azerbaijan was set to increase its gas production by a third in the next decade, with fossil fuel companies forecast to spend $41.4bn (£31.9bn) on the country’s gas fields. Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil and gas company, Socar, and its partners are set to raise the country’s annual gas production from 37bn cubic metres (bcm) today to 49bcm by 2033. Socar also recently agreed to increase gas exports to the European Union by 17% by 2026. The Cop29 summit, starting on 11 November in Azerbaijan, comes as scientists say that continued record carbon dioxide emissions means “the future of humanity hangs in the balance”. The International Energy Agency said in 2021 that no new fossil fuel exploitation should take place if CO2 emissions were to fall to zero by 2050. https://lnkd.in/eR9ca4Bd Source: The Guardian #cop29 #leaveitintheground #nonewfossilfuels

COP29 is well underway. It might be fair to say the conference leaves a little to be desired. 1. The host country is ramping up fossil fuel gas Azerbaijan is planning to boost production by a third over the next decade, and the country's president called fossil fuel reserves 'a gift from god'. 2. COP29's chief executive was filmed offering investment opportunities in Azerbaijan's oil and gas industry The chief executive of COP29 and deputy energy minister of Azerbaijan, Elnur Soltanov, was filmed by Global Witness offering to set up meetings at COP for what he believed to be a Hong Kong investment company. 3. The big polluters are not attending Conspicuous by their absence are China, India, and Germany. The US delegation is also from an administration that has a matter of weeks left in power, soon to be replaced by one that is skeptical about climate change. #COP29 #NetZero #ESG

🌍 RMI at COP29: Doubling Efficiency, Mobilizing Finance, and Tackling Methane 🌍 As COP29 unfolds in Baku, RMI is set to push for transformative action on the world’s most pressing climate challenges. This year’s “finance COP” is a pivotal moment to prioritize the Global South with commitments to extend climate finance, reduce wasteful energy use, and slash methane emissions. Here’s what we’re focused on: 🔋 Doubling Energy Efficiency: We can’t build enough renewables fast enough if we don’t first make the system more efficient. Doubling energy efficiency could cut emissions substantially, unlocking trillions in savings and making clean energy growth achievable. 💰 Scaling Blended Finance: RMI advocates for blending public and private funds to drive climate investment where it’s needed most — especially in the Global South. The G20 is already setting the stage for this, and we’re urging COP29 to catalyze unprecedented financial flows for global climate action. 📉 Curbing Methane: Methane is 80x more potent than CO2 in warming the planet, so cuts deliver immediate climate benefits. RMI partners with satellite and sensor tech to spotlight methane leaks and advocates for embedding methane targets into national climate plans. 🏗️ Green Iron Corridors: The future of steelmaking is clean hydrogen and renewables. By supporting green iron and steel production, we can lower emissions in heavy industry and build new opportunities for regions rich in iron and clean energy potential. Join us in championing a fair and rapid transition for all. #COP29 #ClimateFinance #EnergyEfficiency #MethaneReduction #GreenSteel https://bit.ly/40AJtbA

Proud to be on the ground at #COP29 once again for RMI in Baku, Azerbaijan to push for critical steps toward a clean energy future: 1. Reducing demand for energy aka putting energy efficiency at forefront of the clean energy shift. 2. Slashing methane leaks from the oil and gas and waste sectors - our only hope to get back on a 1.5c course. 3. Addressing finance shortfalls and accelerating momentum in the Global South by blending public and private investment. 4. Clearing key hurdles to decarbonize heavy industry.

#cop29 vs #oilgas The president of COP29’s host country has told the UN climate conference that oil and gas are a "gift of god". Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev criticised "Western fake news" about the country's emissions and said nations "should not be blamed" for having fossil fuel reserves. The country plans to expand gas production by up to a third over the next decade. Shortly afterwards, UN chief António Guterres told the conference that doubling down on the use of fossil fuels was "absurd". He said the "clean energy revolution" had arrived and that no government could stop it. Separately, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledged further reductions on emissions, saying the UK will now aim for an 81% decrease by 2035. The UK called for other countries to match the new target. "Make no mistake, the race is on for the clean energy jobs of the future, the economy of tomorrow, and I don't want to be in the middle of the pack - I want to get ahead of the game," Sir Keir told the conference. Aliyev said the country’s share in global gas emissions was "only 0.1%". "Oil, gas, wind, sun, gold, silver, copper, all... are natural resources and countries should not be blamed for having them, and should not be blamed for bringing these resources to the market, because the market needs them." Road to the United Nations' #Cop29. This week on the Argus Media's Cop 29 hub. I had a look at the role of the private sector in the #energytransition. 'Path of least resistance' comes to mind. Here: https://lnkd.in/eKfYSkBg And Georgia Gratton and Victoria Hatherick took a look at the UK's new climate leadership, restoring pledges the previous administration scrapped and seeking to funnel investment to renewables. => https://lnkd.in/em4VrP2m And two previous features on gas, on the hub for a limited time. Jana Červinková and Antonio Peciccia looked at the role of #gas as a transition fuel after getting recognition in the global stocktake at Cop 28 last year, and how it could face a reality check. Here: https://lnkd.in/ekPrn8Wh Elaine Mills looked at gas in Africa. Fragmented markets, makes it more difficult to aggregate demand for large developments. Is it really bad that the Chief Executive of COP29 the UN Climate Change Conference has been filmed talking about making deals for new Fossil Fuel projects? Yes (and No) Elnur Soltanov is the Chief Executive of the COP29 Conference being held in Azerbaijan. He is also their Deputy Energy Minister. Oil and Gas account for almost half of Azerbaijan's total economy and 90% of its exports. Why on Earth are we allowing a country so dependent on Oil and Gas for its economy to host a conference on climate change? They are always going to be compromised. Are they really going to say, 'Let's stop using these Fossil Fuels' and collapse their own economy? Absolutely they will want to promote their 'green transition'. There is obviously a breach in trust. COP is meant to be independent of deal making, so the implication that a company might sponsor the event and then expect some meetings to discuss investment is against their rules. But does anyone really believe that is the case? A company sponsors an event and doesn't expect influence?? Note that the BBC is selective in the attached video highlighting the Gas Fields comment and not the Green projects comment. I get the feeling this is someone touting their country for external investment (with someone representing an external investor), not just fossil fuels. It's also a bit of a honey trap. The undercover reporter is pretending to be representing a multi-billion investment company. I don't feel I'm in a position to criticise. Whilst I like to think personally we are doing our bit for the environment, I'm not sure we are. #cop29 #energy #energytech https://lnkd.in/eE8Rerd6

Today in Energy: The International Energy Agency is now just another green activist campaign [Follow me on X at @EnergyAbsurdity] My new story at The Telegraph slams the International Energy Agency (IEA) for its lurch off into rank political advocacy in the wake of COP28. Here's an excerpt: In an emailed document, Birol – a Turkish economist who is also chair of the Davos energy advisory board – announced Monday that his agency will now “join forces on implementation of COP28 outcomes,” thus now serving in an overtly political role seeking to set policy. Noting that the nations present at last December’s COP28 event in Dubai agreed to commitments of “limiting global warming to 1.5 °C – including the goals of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, doubling energy efficiency improvements this decade, and accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels,” Birol says his agency will now coordinate with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or UNFCCC, on the implementation of that decidedly political agenda. While the IEA may also continue to cling to the pretense of remaining an independent analytical agency, this move will as a practical matter render it as just another of the myriad campaigning wings of the UN. As such, the IEA will now be tasked with parroting whatever new climate narratives are rolled into the speeches given by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at events around the world. Guterres has become infamous for using rhetoric like “global boiling,” and “highway to hell” in his efforts to stoke public fears and support for the net-zero agenda in recent years. It will be interesting now to observe how the IEA manages to roll paragraphs about “global boiling” into its periodic forecasts on crude oil supply and demand, which have already lost all connection with reality. When IEA issued its projection of crude oil demand growth for 2024 of less than 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in advance of the COP28 meeting, it was clear to pretty much everyone it was an intentionally lowball estimate designed as part of the narrative of an energy transition away from fossil fuels. [End] You can read the rest at the link below. ⛽ The Cop 29 conflict: the world needs to decarbonise, but its thirst for fossil fuels continues to rise ↓ 🇦🇿 The UN's annual climate event Cop-29 kicked off in Azerbaijan this week. The fossil fuel rich Caucasus country epitomises a tension at the core of the green agenda. As much as the world needs to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change, demand for fossil fuels continues to rise. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAbGDq9h 🔥 Natural gas, which is used to transition from coal to renewables, is a case in point. Global demand for gas is expected to rise by 2.5% this year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Investment into gas extraction and liquefied natural gas capacity is ramping up around the world. 🗣️ Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev said on November 12 that oil and gas were a “gift of God” and that “countries should not be blamed” for being endowed with and selling natural resources. “The market needs them,” he said. Azerbaijan has benefitted from European efforts to diversify away from Russian gas since its full-scale Ukraine invasion – but that means the Cop-29 host needs to increase its gas production to meet its exports target. ❓ What do you think ❓ Is gas a necessary bridge in the transition from coal to renewables ❓ Or should we be halt all new fossil fuel projects and focus on renewables, grid infrastructure and battery energy storage❓ 👏 Thanks to Christoph Halser of Rystad Energy, Greg Muttitt of International Institute for Sustainable Development, Jacob Mandel of Aurora Energy Research and other experts for sharing their perspective. #data #cop29 #fossilfuels #gas #naturalgas #energytransition #climate
