Can immersive experiences transform how we understand and participate in urban planning? Read Below 👇 This is FuturePortals, a project that creatively merges urban policy, design, and emerging technologies to map out future scenarios for Barcelona. This endeavor, a collaborative effort with Sophie M., an EU policy expert now exploring how to shape futures more creatively at IAAC/Elisava, has brought a fresh perspective to the policy-making process. Sophie and I have been focused on harnessing the potential of generative AI to offer policymakers and citizens alike a visual and interactive glimpse into the possible outcomes of implementing various urban policies. Our aim with FuturePortals is to make the abstract tangible—allowing users to experience immersive 360-degree visions of how initiatives like the EU’s Green Deal could transform urban life. We debuted FuturePortals at last month's Design Dialogues 2 event, where we presented several simulations based on some of my favorite foresight methodologies. These included policy programs from ongoing EU strategies such as the Renovation Wave and the Circular Economy Action Plan, projected right onto the streets of Barcelona. Participants could virtually step into several speculative futures, each grounded in different policy decisions. While still in the pilot phase, we are excited about refining the integration of interactive feedback mechanisms to enhance the accuracy and relevance of our simulations. The project's evolution is geared towards not only improving the simulations but also expanding its application to broader urban and policy contexts. How can we use virtual tools to improve urban planning? 🏙 💡 We recently hosted an event together with Standortförderung Baselland to which we invited around 60 spatial planners, architects and technologists to explore the possibilities of #virtual #urbanplanning. On the square in front of our studio, visitors were able to experience the AIRE platform (developed by iart) and immerse themselves in future scenarios on a 1:1 scale with the help of extended reality glasses. In dialogue with an #AI agent, they could access further information about the location and the construction project and were able to change the plans in real time using voice or gesture recognition. In the subsequent panel discussion, Thomas Waltert (cantonal planner at the Canton of Basel-Landschaft), Philipp Sostmann (PwC Switzerland), Tobias Matter (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts), Yves Diacon (HRS Real Estate) and Valentin Benjamin Spiess (iart) examined the possibilities and challenges of the technology from different perspectives. The discussion was moderated by angelika hinterbrandner. 📹 We have compiled a few important statements in this video. It was an exciting evening - many thanks to everyone who took the time to participate! #ai #xr #extendedreality #urbanplanning #urbandesign #participation

Okay, this is an AI-generated image of a modern biophilic design inside an airport ✈️🌿. Here´s the caption: "Bringing nature into the heart of travel. This moss installation transforms airport spaces into serene retreats, creating a calming experience for travelers. Discover how biophilic design enhances the journey. Sometimes, to express your vision, you don’t have to spend hours of work or a lot of money to capture someone’s attention 💡. All the AI tools now available, gives us an amazing power to create something. Where do you think we, as humans, will be in the next few years? AI is taking giant leaps forward, yet schools just can’t keep pace to prepare our children for the world they’ll live in 10 years from now 📈🌐. One thing I’m certain of is this: our connection with nature is essential for all human beings 🌳💚. No AI or AR will ever replace the depth, peace, and grounding that true nature brings to our lives. It’s something fundamentally human—a part of us that technology can enhance but never truly replicate. #AirportDesign #LuxuryGreenSpaces #NatureInArchitecture"

Cumulus Budapest 2024 – P/References of Design I have been invited to speak on Data as Medium, in relation to research on the relationship between digital technology and urban environments at Cumulus - P/References of Design hosted by MOME Post-Cadastral Determinism – Unravelling Urban Cartographies, Valuation, Behaviour and Decision-Making in Realtime. The ‘Post-Cadastral’ condition establishes and explores a domain of urban and architectural invention – a city’s imminent escape from cadastral space, embracing virtual realms and digital ubiquity. It is concerned with the hyper-reality of virtual space as mooring of invisible cultural, economic, and societal forces. The domain of research operates at limits of material and spatial practice, integrating the physical, the virtual and holographic; and engaging with real-time, urban data analytics, simulation, gamification, techno-cultural discourse and narrative, AI, and generative techniques. The research explores the convergence of augmented urban infrastructures and services, delineating the interwoven threads of value generation (value capture), behavioural shifts, and performance metrics. It unpacks the emergent paradigm where cities, unleashed from historical cartographic constraints, traverse fluid territories shaped by the synergistic forces of digital evaluations and algorithmic orchestration. In this epochal shift, urban spaces transmute into arenas where cadastral limitations yield to an amorphous terrain of digital augmentation and evolving spatial imaginaries. This talk will discuss the intricate interplay of web-centric reviews, ratings, comments, and AI-driven algorithms that organise a departure from conventional urban spatiality – a city abstracted by search terms and contained in the comments sections and sorted by popularity. What are the potential impacts of [Urban] AI on the design sector? Some imagine a future where AI achieves full autonomy, independently creating groundbreaking designs. Others highlight AI's potential to foster greater engagement with underrepresented challenges in design—such as settlements from the Global South—and the role of "more-than-human" agents in large-scale urban development. For most designers, however, AI is seen primarily as a tool that enhances human creativity by automating repetitive tasks, enabling designers to focus on innovation. As we stand at the crossroads of technology and creativity, Urban AI raises pressing questions about balancing technological advancements with human agency in shaping the cities of tomorrow. Artificial Intelligence offers thrilling new challenges and opportunities for designing human experiences. In an AI-powered Smart City, the connection between a building’s form and function can radically shift. Imagine a school not as a single building but as a dynamic service utilizing the city’s resources, similar to models in Finland. If buildings become flexible infrastructures for dynamic purposes, how do we create distinct identities and atmospheres? What will buildings in an AI-orchestrated city look like, and how do we design them? As the separation of function from physical form occurs, our environments must be open to interpretation while offering unique, irreplaceable experiences. — The above is the premise of my 2017 UCLA XLab studio and the photos are from our 1994 physical model of the Arabianranta urban development in Helsinki by the Ocean group. The model is still in our studio. Back then, we envisioned more dynamic ways of designing, programming, and building cities. As fate would have it, these ideas are now becoming both relevant and realizable. #ai #urbandesign #architecture #designinghumanexperiences #sotamaa #research
