🩺 Celebrating the Vital Roles of All Nursing Home Staff 🩺 A recent study published in JAMDA highlights the incredible impact that different nursing home staffing types have on resident care. This research is crucial as new staffing regulations are considered and care quality is optimized. Key insights from the study: Registered Nurses (RNs): Their presence is associated with fewer hospitalizations and better care for pressure sores. RNs play a critical role in communicating behavioral concerns and initiating appropriate treatments. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs): Increased CNA hours lead to decreased antipsychotic drug use and improvements in daily living activities. CNAs provide essential daily care and develop insights into person-centered care routines that significantly enhance resident well-being. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs): While not highlighted as frequently as RNs and CNAs, LPNs are crucial in supporting both groups and ensuring the smooth delivery of care. Each category of nursing staff brings unique and valuable contributions to resident care, highlighting the need for a balanced and well-supported team. Hiring decisions should consider the specific strengths and roles of RNs, CNAs, and LPNs to meet individual resident needs effectively. This is definitely something I have viewed in my region as well. This is such a complex issue, that I believe requires several solutions. A statistic that really opened my eyes is that we have a waiting list of over 90,000 eligible nursing students in the US between 2021-2022 due to shortages of nursing faculty and clinical sites. Great job to Arizona College of Nursing taking an initiative to find solutions to improve enrollment to supply the workforce. Not only improve the supply, but improve the quality of education to ensure burnout does not occur within the first year as this article mentions. Under rules and regulations and codes of ethics, it's the duty and responsibility of all nurses to provide a safe environment for all patients and I am here to remind all #nurses that nothing supersedes the professional license of a provider ever! What Alex has created is revolutionary! It's not just about providing breaks; it's about ensuring continuity of care and mitigating risks - a gift to any organization. When there's a relief #nurse, work continues seamlessly, preventing delays and potential legal repercussions to the nurse and the organization. As a nurse with 23 years of critical care experience and former investigator for a board as well as a civil and administrative expert, I've seen the consequences of inadequate staffing and lack of breaks cost patients their lives and nurses their licenses. Alex's solution isn't just a win for nurses—it's a win for organizations. It saves thousands of dollars in legal fees and fines from governing bodies, improves #nurse satisfaction and retention, and, most importantly, enhances #patientcare and safety. Nurses week is a complicated relationship for many... I've grappled with whether to share this. Yet, now feels like the right moment. It's vital to acknowledge the complexity surrounding this celebration of our profession. For numerous nurses, it's a reminder of unresolved trauma stemming from our work in healthcare. We navigate through triggering experiences, feeling a tug-of-war between honoring our dedication and confronting the realities we face daily.🎭 The festivities and events meant to honor us often fall flat. They can feel like empty gestures, highlighting the stark difference between recognition and genuine support. Pizza parties, yard signs, and posters miss the mark of what we truly need. Years of this cycle culminate during nurses week, leaving many of us feeling resentful and unheard. 😷 To my fellow nurses struggling through this week, I want you to know you're not alone. While I understand a #linkedin post won't solve the systemic issues plaguing healthcare, I hold onto hope. Hope that we can reshape #nursesweek into something more meaningful. A week dedicated to gratitude and amplifying our voices as stakeholders in healthcare. 🤝 Let's push for initiatives that bring about real change in our working conditions. "2024 Long Term Care Nurse Staffing Study (LTCNSS) During the spring of 2024, the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies (TCNWS) at the Department of State Health Services is asking all directors of nursing facilities in Texas to complete a short survey. The information collected will be used to: Assess the size and effects of the nursing shortage in Texas' long-term care nursing facilities. Forecast the number of nurses needed in Texas. Serve as a resource for the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies’ Advisory Committee, the Governor's Office, and legislators in establishing legislative priorities and making policy decisions. Please be aware that your survey responses will be strictly confidential. All findings will be reported in aggregate form only. Individual agency data will not be identified.
