Is the film industry dying? The entertainment industry is going through a “contraction” felt across all entertainment sectors, including film, TV, animation, and gaming. Many thought once productions set schedules, ordered scripts, and booked studio space, cameras would be rolling sometime in January. But in fact, studios are cutting projects, leaving production levels uncomfortably low in 2024. There is not one sweeping answer for the slowdown; one circumstance or issue seems to lead to another. And, each film community is dealing with specific setbacks in their area. In this article we look at some of the industry reports coming out, dispel rumors and fears, and try to ascertain when the industry will pickup again. In this issue: Why is the film industry slow? More strike action in 2024? Is AI taking over the film Industry? When are the jobs coming? What to do in the meantime. #filmindustry #artdepartment #productiondesign #filmjobs #graphicdesign #graphicartist #moviegraphics #filmgraphics #graphicdesignforfilmandtv #setjobs #graphicprops #filmjobs #graphicarts #filmindustryjobs #graphicdesignforfilm #filmdesign #graphicsinmovies #IATSESTRIKE #filmwork https://lnkd.in/g4qTRS32

Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 pulled in an estimated $30 million over its second weekend to top the domestic box office for the second consecutive week, narrowly outpacing Dune 2. Distributed by Universal, the latest Kung Fu Panda sequel has now grossed $107.7 million from its first two weeks in cinemas and should continue to thrive with no significant kids and family competition on the horizon. The next big studio pictures targeting young audiences will be Paramount Pictures’ IF on May 17 and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie on May 24. Disney will put Luca in cinemas on March 22, but the lackluster theatrical releases of Soul and Turning Red in January and February instill very little confidence that people will show up for Luca. Kung Fu Panda 4, directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, is now the first animated film to top the domestic box office in back-to-back weeks since The Super Mario Bros. Movie did so in April of last year. That film was also released by Universal, which has become the dominant animation distributor at U.S. theaters over the last several years. Things went similarly well for the film abroad, where it grossed $69.6 million from 56 offshore markets. It was second place globally behind Dune 2, but that film was available in 74 territories. Kung Fu Panda 4′s global haul after two weeks sits at $176.5 million. Another Universal-distributed film, Benjamin Renner’s Migration, made $580 in North America during its 13th weekend in theaters and has grossed $126.5 million during that time. Produced by Illumination, the film has made another $159.4 million abroad, for a total worldwide gross of $295.9 million. That’s a hefty sum for an original animated film these days, especially one with a budget of just $72 million.
