Some have argued that government has no business in business. Reality, I reckon, is a solid counter to this argument. To develop a realistic and effective operations strategy, a business must fully appreciate the place and reach of government as a major determinant of business performance within the broader matrix of business success factors. This was the thrust of one of my arguments as a panelist at the recently concluded Global Tech Africa summit.

Only 2 African competition authorities signed the International Competition Network (ICN)'s formal recognition that the technical capacity of competition agencies must be strengthened in relation to digital markets - the The Competition Commission South Africa and the Competition Authority of Kenya. It would be interesting to understand why agencies like the Egyptian Competition Authority, FCCPC Nigeria and the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority did not sign the document, as they are quite focused on digital markets. It appears that the formal recognition is aligned with the report "Compendium of Approaches to Improving Competition in Digital Markets" published by the G7 Hiroshima Summit in November 2023, which contemplates (among others) better relationships between competition agencies and technical experts, and a better understanding of emerging technologies by agencies. Astana hosts the first Asia-Pacific Conference on Digital Inclusion and Transformation, which was attended by representatives of the commercial unit of Jusan Mobile, headed by Chief Commercial Officer Arman Maralov. This important event brought together state leaders, digital technology experts and leading companies in the region under one roof to discuss key issues of the future of digital innovation. The main objective of the conference is to strengthen regional cooperation and focus on bridging the digital divide, improving digital literacy and ensuring stable and reliable digital communications. One of the central points was the speech of the Minister of Digital Development of Kazakhstan, Jaslan Madiyev, who stressed that more than 90% of public services in Kazakhstan are available online, which helped the country to take a leading position in the UN ratings on digitalization. Events of this scale not only contribute to the creation of an inclusive digital future, but also open up wide opportunities for business development. This, in turn, will stimulate economic growth and expand opportunities for the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, creating new prospects and strengthening their positions in the global market.
