Customization is key, startups in this budding sector say. Taking off-the-shelf generative #AI tech, or “large language models” in tech parlance, and tailoring them to work with a company’s existing systems is a technical task requiring knowledge of both #LLMs and of the company to be outfitted, they say. #business #digitaltransformation

My latest in The Wall Street Journal: DeepL, a German startup focused on AI-powered translation services, announced Wednesday $300 million of investment at a $2 billion valuation in a round led by Index Ventures. The company’s success reflects businesses’ increasing interest in function-specific AI models, in this case translation, beyond the general purpose models popularized by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. DeepL, founded in 2017, leverages a proprietary generative AI model trained and designed to bring a new level of sophistication, accuracy and idiomatic comprehension to business translation. “The broad foundational models are going to be very, very helpful for a number of things, but especially when you get into the enterprise space, they’re going to be more sector or vertically oriented,” said Danny Rimer, partner at Index Ventures. Quick thoughts on this trend we're seeing in the market. DeepL’s recent $300 million investment is a clear sign that businesses are increasingly valuing function-specific AI models. Unlike general-purpose tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, DeepL's AI offers exceptional accuracy and nuanced understanding, essential for high-stakes enterprise translations. This shift means companies should look into specialized AI solutions to meet their unique needs, ensuring precision, privacy, and security. For those of us working in global markets, leveraging these targeted AI models can greatly enhance communication and efficiency. It's probably a smart move to start exploring these advancements now to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

“Godmother of AI” Fei-Fei Li founded a #startup called #WorldLabs four months ago, and it’s already worth $1 billion, according to The Verge. Apparently World Labs has already taken two funding rounds from the likes of #AndreessenHorowitz and #RadicalVentures. Around half of startup funding has gone to the #AI sector in the last three months. Li, who has taken a partial break from co-directing the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, is apparently trying to make a breakthrough in giving AI “spatial intelligence” through human-like interpretation of visual information. https://lnkd.in/eWgxbAFC

With the recent surge in interest around Large Language Models (LLM) and investors' newfound fascination with Generative AI, many companies are rushing to integrate generative AI for internal purposes or to enhance product features. However, it's important to question whether these initiatives truly address the underlying issues. For instance, recent news that Klarna's OpenAI agent does the work of 700 support staff. Suppose each support member handles 20 tickets(conversation) daily (the global average is 25), that is 14,000 tickets. This raises an important question: Is the volume of tickets the real problem, or is it how effectively we can manage these tickets with AI? While Klarna, with its resources, can afford to experiment with such technologies, startups should proceed with caution. Before hopping on the LLM bandwagon, it's vital for startups to critically assess whether these solutions genuinely solve their product's core issues. Many startups can still deliver significant value to their users without using AI, and investors should not overlook these startups. #Klarna #Prioritization #Focus

…but startups are now attracting investors and customers by embracing a smaller — and more affordable — approach for #AI small models driven by a number of factors, including #technology improvements, a growing awareness of the immense energy demands #esg and a more diverse range of AI options for different uses. Small language models are not just #cheaper for tech companies to build but also for business customers to use, lowering the bar for adoption. Given that investors are increasingly worrying about the high cost and uncertain payoff of AI ventures, more tech companies may choose to go this route.#digitaltransformation

3wCustomizing LLMs for enterprise applications often involves fine-tuning pre-trained models on proprietary datasets using techniques like transfer learning and prompt engineering. This process requires careful consideration of data preprocessing, model architecture selection, and evaluation metrics tailored to the specific business needs. Given the increasing complexity of enterprise systems, how do you ensure that customized LLMs can effectively handle diverse data formats and integrate seamlessly with existing workflows?
