Why Climate Action matters The urgency in addressing environmental issues has never been greater. We all now have a significant role to play in promoting sustainable development. By almost any metric out there, we are up the proverbial creek without a padel… 🌍The Planetary Boundaries model contains a set of 9 areas which, should we live within the boundary of, would allow humanity to continue to develop and thrive. Proposed in 2009, 3 boundaries had already been exceeded. In the most recent 2023 report, that has already risen to 6. 📈 In the 2015 Paris Agreement, World leaders pledged to keep global temperature rises below 1.5ºC above the pre-industrial period. June 2024 was the warmest June on record. But also the 12th consecutive month 1.5ºC or higher above the pre-industrial period. 📰 Just a glance at today Top Stories on LinkedIn shows the ‘Past year was the warmest on record’. Yet according to a YouGov poll before the UK election, the environment and climate change was the 5th most important issue in deciding a person’s vote. 💬 We need to start talking to decision makers across industries, engage people, and bring a different narrative to the one that exists. It clearly isn’t resonating or getting through to people, so a new tactic is needed. #As many assume Nationally Determined Contribution is not a sliver bullet to bring lasting solutions to climate crisis The National Determined Contributions (NDCs) are pivotal in the global pursuit of the Paris Agreement's objectives, defining each country's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change, and promoting sustainable development. NDCs might also allocate sectoral greenhouse reductions and adaptation measures to address climate change risks. However, NDCs, while essential, are not sliver bullets. The crucial task is translating these national commitments into tangible actions at the company level. Despite substantial investments in green innovation, resources efficiency, energy efficiency, smar agriculture and climate -responsive initiatives, one aspect often overlooked is the establishment of clear and specific targets within individual organizations. Without well-defined company-based goals, even the most ambitious NDCs may fall short of their net-zero aspirations. The significance of Company-Based Targets lies in their operational impact, meeting investor and stakeholder expectations, risk mitigation, fostering innovation and efficiency, and steps toward effective net-zero commitments. By setting quantifiable, science-based, and holistic goals, engaging in collaboration, and promoting transparency, companies can contribute to collective action in combating the pressing climate challenge. It is only through united efforts at all levels that we can effectively address this urgent global issue. Thus it is not too late question how NDCs are well translated under each company action to realize our ambitions into reality.

Opinion: Beyond Mitigation: Why We Must Take Climate Adaptation Seriously Continuing the conversation around a self-centric approach to climate action "protect ourselves", I believe we’re doing remarkable things in climate mitigation. From groundbreaking technologies to new frameworks, guidelines, and even business opportunities, there’s no doubt that progress is being made. But here’s where we fall short: adaptation. Are we doing enough to protect ourselves from the climate impacts already here? While we’re actively working on adaptation, it’s not being prioritized in the way it should be. The sad reality is that business models and opportunities in adaptation aren’t thriving, and it seems like we only move when we see profit. But why should protecting ourselves be driven solely by business incentives? Why don’t we see climate adaptation as a core human value? It’s about safeguarding our communities, ensuring the resilience of our ecosystems, and securing a future for generations to come. These are not just business concerns—they are moral imperatives. That said, if profit is what drives humans, then let’s find something to invest in when it comes to adaptation. Let’s create new models and approaches where everyone feels they have a stake. We can innovate in a way that balances economic interests with human values, making adaptation not just essential, but something worth investing in—both financially and morally. Let’s shift the focus. Adaptation is about survival—our survival—and that’s worth far more than a business opportunity.
