Proud to share that our team secured a rank of 155 in the Amazon ML Challenge, starting strong but facing an unexpected turn on the final day. 📉 From holding rank 18, we saw a surge of new team submissions jump from 300 to 2700+ in just the last hours! While this sudden shift was devastating and unbelievable, we’re still incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and problem-solving skills we demonstrated throughout the competition. 💪 Sometimes the results don’t reflect the effort, but the journey itself has been a tremendous learning experience, and we’ve grown both as individuals and as a team. As part of Excelsior University's celebration of Second Chance Month, yesterday the Center for Social Justice and the Civic Engagement Rope Team had the privilege of hosting Trent Griffin-Braaf, who shared his powerful journey with us in his keynote: 'From Felon to Forbes'. Below are a few highlights of his paradigm-shifting presentation: - The value of family and intentional connection. - The importance of focusing on our health and wellness, regardless of our circumstances. - The relevance of focusing on our personal and professional development. - The power of becoming a forever learner, to learn as much as possible in all situations. - Nothing lasts forever, so put your best step forward every day and focus on learning and preparing for next steps. - Never stop looking for opportunities and pivot as needed. - Remember that an arrow needs to be pulled back before it goes forward. - Focus on identifying needs and pursuing service, leadership, and workforce development opportunities. - Find ways of helping others identify and pursue their goals. - The power of empathy as part of a successful organization and of helping others to do better. - The importance of community engagement and of giving back. Anniversaries are always a great time for reflection. I recently celebrated my first year at Camberwell Girls and it has been nothing short of a rollercoaster experience. Aside from my personal experience with schools, I had no education experience. And with that, I went onto this steep upskill ride which saw me implement a number of positive changes at a rapid rate, as well as lead and deliver 2 huge submissions to the regulator in record time - over twice the amount of deliverables in a quarter of the time previously allocated, I was told. This was no doubt, the highlight of my year - a true baptism of fire! And through this experience comes, of course, the lessons learnt! - Your skills are totally transferable. You have the knowledge and concepts. Apply them to a new industry. - Your ‘lack’ of knowledge in a new industry is an asset. Because you don’t know, you will find out and dig deeper to get a thorough understanding of the requirements. - Education is a lot more complex than most think and the risk management framework in schools is intricate. Teaching is more than providing an education to kids. Next time you meet a teacher, take your hat off to them! - Education is an ever changing industry. If not a change to standards and ministerial orders, you’re being challenged to think on your feet faced with a curly student situation. - You’re responsible for the lives of our future leaders! - Trust in yourself and your ability to push boundaries and achieve great things, no matter what life throws at you. I’m grateful for the opportunity and look forward to the challenges ahead!
