Check out this article from the Language Connects Foundation on the importance of #language and #cultural skills in the criminal justice field. Communicating with people in their native language during times of crisis or tense situations can not only provide them with comfort, but also reduce any misunderstandings. Here at LTI, we work with a number of police departments who are assessing their officers' language skills with ACTFL #assessments. 👩🏻💻 Hello, hello! Here I am with a carousel of a new resource that supports language access in the 🇺🇸 US! If you are a translator or interpreter who: * doesn't live in the US but does not love reading about language access; I will see you later! 😜 * lives in the US, this is a must-read 👀 as it supports not only LEP patients' language access but also our ability to make a living. Let me rewind a little bit. * 1964: Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) is a Federal law that protects persons from discrimination based on their race, color, or national origin in programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance. Language is included within national origin. Source: https://bit.ly/44iRp1h * 2010: the Affordable Care Act (ACA) allowed Americans to have access to healthcare, get insurance with preexisting conditions, expand protections for minorities, and much more. Section 1557 of the ACA makes it unlawful for any health care provider who receives funding from the federal government to refuse to treat an individual—or to otherwise discriminate against the individual—based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Source: https://bit.ly/3UnXd52 Section 1557: https://bit.ly/3UFxlTE *Since we are in 2024, the ACA needed a facelift. *drumroll* Here is the final rule for Section 1557 of the ACA! This is an update, and it includes the use of 🤖 artificial intelligence (AI), 🖥️telemedicine, and expands the protection of 🏳️🌈 LGBTQIA+ individuals by including protection based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Source: https://bit.ly/3WDR2g3 Being familiar with the rules that support language access can help us better advocate for LEP clients and support the advancement of health equity. Do you think this rule will improve language access for LEPs? Sign language was recently Constitutionalised with the other 11 Official languages in South Africa During my research Ive encountered people who use Sign Language to communicate & I had overlooked it in error, its fixed now but ... It made me wonder if employers were going to start training and hiring people who use Sign Language. Are we ready for that kind of progressive inclusion as a country? Being fluent in Sign Language should be considered a rare skill until the majority of us can Sign through a conversation. I am going to make an effort to learn Sign Language like I did French. Id go as far as saying there should be a dedicated drive by society, govt and anybody else to get the majority of society signing. Just the thought of somebody who uses sign language going to report a crime & being able to get help without an interpreter. It can be done. it SHOULD be done

#PSI #PAIT #policeinterpreter #appreciation post to all my colleagues out there providing invaluable #publicservice in name of #justice and #universalunderstanding The other day I was called to the West Yorkshire police custody in the capacity of #DPSILaw #Slovaklanguage #interpreter giving up my weekend (as you do) and was met by an Independent Police Custody visiting Inspector #IPCV making an unannounced visit there, who praised our professional linguist work supporting #criminaljustice and said we are really #valued and #appreciated ! You don’t hear that often so I thought to share this as we often work selflessly and quietly alone, travel a lot battling motorway traffic, running out of fuel and absorbing #trauma daily by actively #listening to real #humanstories interpreting #policeinterviews under caution for evidential purposes- no time to look up this or that word- difference between #translator and #interpreter on the go as well as accurately and speedily translating #witnessstatements for use at interviews or to help victims to get their justice. This is quite a stressful and responsible role in the #publicservice breaking #languagebarriers and contributing to #communitycohesion We are strictly #vetted and work hard to keep our professional #qualifications and #memberships going yet our job is often undermined or misunderstood by the public or even our own families. So, when I heard this positive outlook on our work of the #professionalinterpreter, I felt #inspired and #energised that early on a Saturday morning when the most of my friends are still soundly asleep… My fellow interpreters colleagues: Keep going, keep negotiating T & C's so witholding of language services will not become an issue- see court interpreters movement, as you’re much needed so feel proud being #voiceforthevoiceless If you want to know more about how to become a professional interpreter in the UK, any language combination- contact me for some tailored to your needs and levels #mentoring #coaching @consultslovak

Interpreting is essential for clear communication across languages, but many misconceptions exist about this crucial service. In our latest blog, we explore these myths and share key insights to help you understand interpreting better. 👇 Takeaways: ➡️ Interpreters and translators are not the same. ➡️ Bilingualism alone doesn't make someone a good interpreter. ➡️ Children should not interpret for adults. ➡️ Interpreters provide critical cultural context, not just direct translation. ➡️ Choosing the right interpreter involves considering their specialization and, sometimes, gender. Thrilled at Dr Lingxia Zhou's just-published review of my book! Happy that she liked it, of course; her 'favourite chapter' is my Lived Linguistic Landscape (Ch 8). I'm even happier that she has carefully summarised the main points and the contribution my book makes both to research methods and to our understanding of how language rights actually work, not only in China. This will really help those who don't have time to read the whole book. [Looking at you, language policy-makers and language policy researchers! Everyone is time-poor ;) ] https://lnkd.in/gBc85r7E Zhou writes: "As a researcher in language policy and planning, I am fascinated by Grey’s innovative integration of lived linguistic landscape studies into language rights [...] She also extends the study of linguistic landscape to an examination of viewers’ subjectivity through ‘commented walks’ and interviews with interlocutors conducted while walking through the landscapes (p. 220). It would be interesting to see future research on other minority languages adopting similar approaches. With relevance beyond China, this study also connects mobility, capitalism and globalisation in the Chinese context through its discussion of minority language politics. It is a valuable contribution to our growing understanding of language policy and planning, linguistic justice, linguistic landscape and contemporary China studies. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the above-mentioned fields."

"As long as language access remains uneven in state courts, millions of Americans will remain underserved by the justice system. Defendants will be less capable of defending their cases. Civil litigants will be hampered in their pursuit of justice. And perhaps most importantly, countless injustices will continue unchecked because those harmed—from victims of financial crimes to those living through domestic violence and sexual abuse—simply can’t access the system that’s designed to save them." https://lnkd.in/gFFvMqs7 #interpreter #translation #translationservices #translationagency #traduction #languages #languageservices

We've been working with South Asian Legal Clinic of British Columbia (SALCBC) on our latest documentary, but our previous collaboration got over 200,000 views on TikTok alone and had people literally knocking on their office door. Read more for our 3 takeaways. The challenge? Create engaging videos that addressed FAQs for South Asian international students in Canada. They needed to work for social media and WhatsApp. Oh... and include Hindi, Punjabi and English. Creating believable narratives that addressed complex legal considerations in multiple languages with various actors was a significant challenge but not an insurmountable one. What did we learn? AI 🤝 Multi-lingual content 🤓 We didn’t speak all three languages captured so editing was a challenge. We relied on Google Translate and ChatGPT to guide the editing process by translating back and forth to English. But we still value humans, who checked them all! You can't escape planning 🗓 We captured a whopping 35 separate scenarios. We navigated time limits, set changes and actors who spoke different languages that weren't available for the entire day. It took a detailed matrix of combinations from the brain of Tricia Stevens Work your values 💪 If you're committed to a story, don't limit it to one project. Supporting SALC in their awareness campaign aligns with our commitment to aiding South Asian international students facing numerous challenges in Canada. You can watch the videos in all three languages on SALCBC's YouTube 👉 https://lnkd.in/g8z2h82J #internationalstudents #freelegaladvice #southasian #britishcolumbia

So excited to present online about the topic of language access in the courts with NIWAP Director Leslye Orloff and Christine Stoneman from the USDOJ on 4/2/24 from 3-4:30 pm EST on language access. Language access in the courts is still a very important topic even in 2024. People have many barriers that are fear driven that hamper their ability and willingness to seek relief from injustice or properly defend themselves in non-criminal proceedings. Having myself been in frightening situations while traveling where the local authorities search a vehicle, accost you in the street, or prevent you from walking through the airport, all the while speaking their local language left me with a feeling of being helpless and I do have access to some privilege resources. But to be in a court system, unrepresented at times, holding papers that make no sense and wondering what are the ramifications when your only reference point may be the way court business is conducted in the country you fled to be safer is unimaginable. We must all recognize that language barriers also exist with people who were born here if the wording may as well be a foreign language. The link to register is in the flyer. #languageaccess #interpreters #courtaccess #accesstojustice #courtinterpreters #
