Their isolation is often worsened by a lack of accessible resources.🧵 In the UK, 22,000 people use #BSL as their main language, Deaf women are 2-3 times more likely to experience #DomesticAbuse than hearing women. However, due to inaccessible public information, they are often less aware of their rights & available support. 🧵 Older BSL users face unique challenges escaping abuse, shaped by a history of limited access to media & services. @SignHealth offer a specialist domestic abuse service to Deaf people, supporting them to achieve greater safety & security. 🧵

Staff interpreters are the backbone of a health system’s efforts to improve outcomes for patients from diverse linguistic backgrounds. They serve a crucial role, promoting effective communication and comprehensive language access and fostering a sense of trust between the health system and the communities they serve. Eliminating in-house language access support undermines social justice, negatively impacting already marginalized groups within a community. #languageaccess #healthequity #languagejustice #socialjustice

#DepartmentofJustice in South Africa, Cape Town what is the issue with your court interpreters? Cases are being "thrown" out because there are no interpreters present. Resultantly the deaf are losing money for transport and other expenses as they receive several dates to appear in court. This is a continuous and frustrating cycle for the majority of the deaf people who feel there is no justise for them. South African Sign Language is the 12th official language. Yet the deaf community still do not feel included. The lack of opportunities for them. There are deaf organisations that offer sign language training for the justice and health department, but there is no response. Let's make this inclusive for everyone. We speak about Ubuntu, but where is it. #inclusivity #deafcommunity #signlanguage #departmentofjustice #courtinterpreters
