Political analysis is more than just a profession—it's a responsibility to interpret and understand the forces shaping our society and the world.
A Political Analyst explores policy trends, geopolitical dynamics, and governance structures to contribute to informed decision-making. This field also allows professionals to work on an international scale while staying rooted in their own country, making meaningful contributions globally.
Beyond politics, a Political Analyst can engage in impactful work in areas like Human Rights, promoting justice and equality on a broader scale. The possibilities are both challenging and rewarding, shaping a better future for all.

An important lesson in why analysts and journalists have to push back and maintain independence. It’s not that our professions can’t agree to ask topics that interviewees want. But accepting questions whole-hog without any editorial view or perspective destroys credibility & shows a lack of basic subject matter comprehension.
I’ve probably had a 100 discussions like this in my analyst career, including underwritten and commissioned work. But regardless of funding, research and news processes have to be independent to be believable.

Here is a summary of my experience and interests!
I have a diverse array of experience working with mixed methods research, including coding in R, conducting policy analyses, and working with the Department of State. While working as a research assistant, I gained experience collecting data from various legislative databases, such as LIS and VPAP, at the state level (VA and GA). In these roles, I organized this data in Excel. While working with climate data, I then went through and evaluated the significance of each entry compared to the platform of our group of interest. While writing my Master’s thesis, I conducted an in-depth longitudinal policy analysis, spanning about 15 years, at the federal level. Additionally, I analyzed several datasets in R. Based on these analyses, I drew conclusions regarding how this policy was implemented in a context of xenophobia and populism. As a Diplomacy Lab team member with the Department of State, I gained experience conducting open-source intelligence research. On this project, I compiled weekly reports of my findings and worked with my team to prepare a briefing and policy suggestions to present to our contact in DC. From these experiences, I have become a confident and efficient researcher, and a strong writer.
I thoroughly enjoy researching policy issues, and I would like to work as a policy analyst or open-source intelligence researcher. I have a BA in International Relations with a Minor in Russian, and an MA in Political Science. My MA thesis focused on Polish migration policy, and the country’s treatment of Ukrainian labor migrants versus labor migrants from non-European states. During my time in school, I focused on Eurasian and Migration studies, specifically labor migration and identity politics. As a result, I am hoping to work in a field related to International/Eurasian policy, European migration or domestic immigration policy, or domestic labor/civil rights policy. My dream job would be to work at a think tank working as an analyst on European migration policy.
Thank you,
Abby Schlitzer
