Corporates are becoming the kingpins of generative #AI investment. Last year, more than half of the dollars invested in generative AI #startups came from #funding rounds involving #corporate backers. Stock markets are rewarding these big gen AI spenders handsomely. In most cases, anyway. There are a few exceptions. The AI industry is experiencing a surge in investment, leading to concerns about a potential bubble akin to the dot-com bust, with experts like James Ferguson and firms like Sequoia Capital warning of the need for substantial revenues to sustain the sector. Despite the hype driving up tech stocks and venture investment in AI startups, there is skepticism about the actual benefits and viability of many AI companies, with Goldman Sachs questioning the return on investment in generative AI. Observers like Gayle Jennings-O'Bryne predict a bubble burst in the AI market due to overvaluation and a lack of sustainable business models, potentially leading to startup failures and investor losses within the next few years. #AIBubble #TechInvestment #StartupRisks #GenerativeAI #FutureOfAI

My latest: As the generative AI funding boom continues and a few major AI bets fizzle out, one question people keep asking is who are the biggest AI investors and how much exposure do they have? After analyzing 344 funding rounds for ~300 startups, we discovered that the top 9 VC firms have collectively led $9.5B in gen AI investments. Other important takeaways: 1. Lightspeed, Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, and Index Ventures rank among the top nine gen AI investors by the value of the rounds led. These four firms were also the busiest by deal volume. 2. Lightspeed has led more AI rounds (20) than any other VC in the market, with a total deal value of $1.15B. 3. Accel tops the list by deal value, but the investment firm has been ramping up dealmaking activities over the last year. If there's a mega-round around the corner these days, Accel (or one of the other eight companies) is likely the lead investor. 4. The dynamic duo of Nat Friedman and Dan Gross have shown up in quite a lot of AI deals, according to our tracker. The two frequently co-invest and say they try to invest between $1M and $100M in funding rounds. I’m always watching the latest trends, especially in tech and innovation. And the venture capital scene right now? Pretty wild! While overall investments dipped by 12%, AI is still the biggest bet of the show, accounting for nearly 40% of all funding. Investors are doubling on AI, IT, and healthcare through massive mega-rounds. Honestly, if you’re a startup and not incorporating AI into your model, you’re missing out. The future of VC seems tied to how intelligent your algorithms are to solve current problems! So, what’s holding startups back? My question to those not incorporating AI yet is simple: what’s stopping you? Is it the high costs or the lack of technical know-how? The hardest part of this trend is seeing fantastic ideas get devoured by AI. Want to deliver the news? AI does it faster. Thinking of starting a design company? Yep, AI’s already miles ahead. It’s becoming harder to ignore the fact that, in many industries, AI is not just a nice-to-have—it’s essential for survival. What’s the game plan if you’re a startup trying to compete? I’d love to hear your thoughts. PS: I loved the insights from https://lnkd.in/deCHddMP - the source for my above details.

The VC market is increasingly defined by deals for AI companies, which captured a remarkable 41% of US VC deal value in the first half of 2024, according to the latest PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor. Driving much of the investment, though, are larger deals involving actors that aren’t traditional VC firms. AI and machine learning companies collected $38.6 billion of the $93.4 billion invested in US VC deals during that period, and the sector’s share of total US VC deal count increased to 26.8%.
