A friend told me about a cool refactor he did but couldn't explain why he did it. After asking 3 Whys, we got down to the bottom of it, and we were able to formulate the benefit of the refactor in business terms. It is really important to know how to translate what we do, so that the business appreciates it. Practice, ask for assistance from your team leader, and make sure you are aligned with the current business goals. Remember: we are problem solvers, not code monkeys! Hiring is difficult. Especially if you look for the wrong people 😬 Nowadays, most open engineering roles read like this: "Software Engineer" However, engineering has grown a lot in the last decades. And many people join the space with very different motives. Understanding what drives people is crucial in finding the right talent. For example, hiring a traditional Software Engineer when you actually need a Product Engineer leads to frustration on both sides. So, how do they differ? Here's the summary: 1️⃣ Full-Stack Engineers drive profound technical innovation. Given a problem, they build a robust, well-tested solution that scales. 2️⃣ Product Engineers, in contrast, know how to maneuver the uncertainty of new features. They take the right shortcuts at the right time. They bear imperfection for the sake of early feedback. That said, both types of developers are still needed. Even within the same company. Linear, for example, does a great job at that. They have open roles for Full-Stack Engineers and Product Engineers. Both working on different areas. __ Is that too pedantic, or would it help to have more precise job roles? 😄
