After my first three weeks in legal recruitment, I've gained some valuable insights into the experiences of junior associates. It's clear that many jr. associates are navigating a steep learning curve (I was in the same shoes until a month ago!!) and adjusting to the demands of the legal profession post-law school. To all junior associates out there feeling the fatigue of this transition, I want you to know that you're not alone. I understand the challenges you're facing, and I'm here to offer support, guidance, and a listening ear. My personal career goal is to be more than just a recruiter. I'm here to listen, support, and guide you through your professional journey. Whether you need to vent about a tough day or seek advice on your career path, consider me your go-to resource. Why is this important? By understanding your needs and aspirations early on, I can better assist you in achieving your long-term career goals. Together, we can navigate the legal landscape and explore opportunities that align with your unique journey. If you're a junior associate seeking support or simply want to connect, I invite you to reach out. Let's discuss this over coffee or a virtual chat. Your career success matters, and I'm here to help you achieve it.

To the Lawyers who haven't had time to think about their career: this is for you "𝘐'𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦" I hear this about 20 times a week (conservatively) Passive candidates are extremely common in the legal market. It makes sense. Busy file loads, the pinch of billable hours and then feeling like you have to have some semblance of a life outside of work means you probably won't have time to actively look at what may be out there. Similarly, you're likely satisfied in your role, but with one eye open. 👀 I may approach you with a role that isn't aligned with your career pathway and you'll think "does he know what he's doing" Now imagine I was aware of what you wanted from your career, what type of matters you wanted to work on, or what your ideal firms' were? Specificity helps, but more importantly, so does relationship building. An initial chat? Let's have it A more in-depth chat over coffee? Let's have that too.

How do you talk to your new colleagues about your job move? Just as you rehearsed your speech before giving notice in your previous position, be prepared with a short and sweet statement for your new colleagues regarding your decision to leave and join their organization. Never trash your old jobs; it almost always will come back to haunt you. At worst, it is acceptable to say that you made a mistake and you have learned a lot since taking your last position, and now know why it wasn’t a good match. But, do not go into the gory details. Describe your move in terms of career advancement, and say something positive about your previous firm, if at all possible. The legal or business community is smaller than you think and loyalty is always respected. What have you told your new colleagues about your career move? #lawjobs #legaljobs #jobsearchtips #givingnotice #legalrecruiting For more insights into job search strategies, the legal industry, and the California legal job market, follow SeltzerFontaine LLC, and connect with me and ring the 🔔 at Valerie Fontaine.
