Dyscalculia is a Learning Disability that can impact a student’s ability to understand numbers and math facts. It can manifest in a student as struggling to line up math equations to calculate correctly, swapping numbers, reading and creating graphs or charts and utilizing mental math. A few accommodations for success: -Ability to use a calculator -Graph paper or guide to line up problems -Complete math equations verbally with a scribe when appropriate -Reduce assignment length Check out the Learning Disabilities Association of American at www.ldaamerica.org to learn more. #learningdisabilityawarness #dyscalculia

I have observed that many of my student that are impacted by #Dyscalculia, become very hesitant to write out longer form math problems. And Rightly So! But not when they turn to apps like PhotoMath to just solve the problem for them. Getting creative to help students understand what is happening in the math equation is as imperative as helping students with strategies accommodate them towards success. A common misconception about dyscalculia is that it’s simply “being bad at math.” In reality, dyscalculia is a specific learning disability that affects how the brain processes numerical information. It’s not a lack of effort or intelligence; individuals with dyscalculia often struggle with basic number sense, like recognizing quantities, understanding the relationship between numbers, or estimating time. In the school environment, this misconception can lead to frustration and a lack of proper support, as these students may be unfairly labeled as lazy or inattentive. Without tailored interventions, such as using visual aids, hands-on activities, or alternative problem-solving strategies, students with dyscalculia may struggle unnecessarily, despite their potential to excel in other areas. #differentnotless #neurodiversityadvocate #accommodationsmatter #dyscalculia #educationleadership #neuroaffirming #thedrivetothrive

Identifying dyscalculia in children early on is crucial for timely intervention and support. Here are the key signs to look out for: 🧮 Difficulty with Basic Math Skills: Persistent struggles with basic operations like addition and subtraction. 👈 Persistent Finger Counting: Continued reliance on fingers to count well beyond the expected age. 🔢 Poor Number Sense: Challenges understanding quantities, order, and value of numbers. 📚 Struggles with Math Problems: Difficulty solving word problems and understanding multi-step calculations. 😰 Math Anxiety: Intense fear or stress when faced with math tasks, impacting performance and confidence. 🧠 Difficulty with Mental Math: Trouble performing calculations in their head, often relying on visual aids. 🧩 Poor Memory for Math Facts: Struggles to recall basic math facts quickly and accurately. Early recognition and support can significantly improve outcomes for children with dyscalculia. Many children with learning disabilities, including dyscalculia, struggle with basic math facts, which is often tied to poor number sense. Jonily shares insights on how these children might struggle with addition or subtraction because they lack an intuitive grasp of number magnitude and relationships. To address these challenges, Jonily emphasizes the importance of teaching strategies that enhance number sense. This approach contrasts sharply with traditional methods focusing on memorization and procedural learning. She points out that procedural knowledge is necessary but does not foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
