December 2 marks Special Education Day, celebrating the signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975. This law guarantees access to a free and appropriate public education for students with disabilities, ensuring they receive the support and accommodations needed to succeed in the classroom. IDEA has been updated over time, but its core goal remains the same: to provide inclusive, equitable education for all students. #IDEA #specialeducation #allabilities #specialeducationday #freeandappropriate

Today, on the first #InternationalDayOfPlay, I am excited to share a video from Perkins School for the Blind focusing on playful learning for children with disabilities. What does a child with disabilities need to learn to play? Likely, toys and materials they can access and adults with specialized teaching skills to help with exploration, communication, and decision-making. Let's remember today that there is more than one way to play! 🎈🎉 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/e2ANrk56

The Office of Special Education Programs has developed a two-part self assessment as a voluntary technical assistance tool to assist States in supporting military-connected children with disabilities served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The voluntary self-assessment is applicable for IDEA's provisions requiring a free appropriate public education (FAPE) under Part B, from ages 3 through 21 or early intervention systems under Part C for children with disabilities, from birth to age 3. https://lnkd.in/eByVQY2A
