UX Research, or Product Discovery? Both terms are loaded with baggage, which adds to the confusion. The problem is, we keep creating words as if they’re binary and separate. The label shouldn’t matter. For every problem we’re solving in product, it’s our job to right-size our approach, blending principles where needed to get to the right answers at the right depth and speed. What are the common attributes tied to both UXR and PD? The baggage I hear, whether true or imagined: 🔎 UX Research can take too long, be dogmatic and academic, is focused on screens, and is more about desirability. It’s likely to be long-term and qualitative in focus. Or so they say... 👀 Product Discovery can be more broad but can lack depth, focuses more on the market than the user, and is more apt to be iterative and lean for rapid decision making. Or so they say... What do I say? Take the best of both worlds—each and every time. Cut the things that don’t matter and prioritize those that do for the context you need. UX Researchers are more than capable of lean and right-sized methods (have you met my team?) and Product Discovery can be deep enough to matter, leverage real users, and lead to actionable decision making (hello, ZoCo). Master your toolbox, empower your teams, and move past the stereotypes. Inspired by John Cutler's post last Friday on the baggage of UXR (link in comments). #UX #UXResearch #ProductDiscovery
Very helpful
Totally agree about how UX and PD teams can adapt to the context and reach the desired outcome. Their overlap, collaboration, and consistent communication can produce fast customer-centric products!
Yes! We can do it all if given the resources, capacity, and empowerment to do so!
