Why Are You So Darn Happy? – If I got a dollar for every time I heard that question, I would be rich. As a new commander, my fellow commanders posed that question to me (but they didn’t say darn). After all, I had joined a new organization where most of the leaders had been beaten down and morale was extremely low. To me it was quite simple, who wants to bring a problem to a leader who looks like they have more problems than you? No one. As a new employee at the Dept of Labor, I will always remember seeing this lady getting her morning exercise in by walking through the hallways. She would be bopping to music while wearing the biggest smile you could imagine. Yet, she had a disability so severe that it affected the way she walked. I was so inspired by her as she shuffled through the hall and thought, what could I ever be unhappy about? Her attitude and beautiful smile reminded me how blessed we truly are. I also witnessed the other side of this equation. I recall having a supervisor who was a grumpy Colonel. He never smiled and every day his secretaries would bring him coffee as he sat at his desk with an intimidating scowl. He would soon retire and after 6 months had not found a job to start his second career. Hearing this news, I was not surprised.  I thought to myself, there is not a huge market for a 50-year-old grouch. My Labor OIG staff often ask, why am I so happy?  Each day we are given a blank canvass with new paint and new brushes. We get a chance to create our own picture. It is something that I never take for granted.  Will your portrait be bright and full of hope, or will it be dark and gloomy? I prefer one that is sunny and full of optimism because we don’t know how many days we have left to paint and I want to make each one count. I also find organizations that create positive work environments reduce employee stress while increasing team cohesion and productivity. That is why I am happy.

As a business owner, there is no bigger compliment than having an employee who's left your company ask to come back 🥰 And there's only one reason employees ask to come back.... In the almost 9 years since I started In Social, we've had a total of 4 employees ask to come back (1 of them has even come back multiple times in different capacities!) We've even had previous employees refer their friends and family to work with us, even though they no longer do! These past employees' reasons for leaving in the first place differed, like tog o back to school, wanting to explore other industries, trying out a different field of work that we don't do. But what I know is that these past employees never left because of the team. In fact, our most recent re-hire keeps telling me how much they missed the team (and, of course, we missed them, too)! Why did they want to come back? Because of how much they enjoyed and cared for the people that make up our agency. So, if you're in a position where you manage people, and are looking to hire and *retain* the best talent possible, I hope you always remember this famous quote by Maya Angelou: "[P]eople will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Your employees will always remember how they felt working at your company, and it's the ones who enjoyed it that will want to come back, and bring their friends along with them when they do ✨

Tomorrow I am celebrating 2 Incredible Years at Forte Workplace Law. Four years ago, I never imagined I’d find myself back in the “corporate world,” but then I met Sara and the amazing team. Then came the pandemic, which shifted everything—not just for the world, but for my career path too. It took some time, but I discovered my true passion for process improvements and realized I could get paid for doing what I love. 2). Find your Unicorn: Throughout my career, I have often felt that I did not conform to conventional expectations. My aspiration has always been to find a role where I am genuinely respected, supported, and valued for my contributions. After 26 years, I am delighted to have found that role. The importance of finding a position that aligns with your values and strengths cannot be overstated. A role that truly fits not only enhances job satisfaction but also significantly contributes to personal and professional growth. For those still on the search, persistence is key. Your perfect match is out there and achieving that alignment can make a profound difference in your career fulfillment and success. Two things I reminded myself before quitting my corporate job this year (after 10 years with the company): 1. You are 100% replaceable at work. You are not replaceable at home. 2. I recently had an exceptional candidate lined up for a Controller role with one of our clients. Her skills were stellar and her experience was spot-on. She was excited about the opportunity, but during her due diligence, she stumbled upon a concerning review on Glassdoor about the organization. I took her concerns seriously and engaged with the organization. Transparency from my client was key in getting this deal done. I requested the candidate be allowed to speak with some current employees to get a firsthand account of the company culture. Initially, the organization hesitated. But I emphasized how crucial this step was for the candidate's confidence in accepting the role. Understanding this, they graciously made accommodations. After candid conversations with current staff, our candidate was reassured and excited to join the team – and she accepted the offer! I put this out here for a gentle reminder...monitor your business's online reputation. While negative reviews may often come from a place of discontent from former employees, they should never be dismissed. Be willing to address potential concerns head-on and provide transparency to prospective employees...it could end up costing you a talented and qualified candidate!
