Dr John H Howard’s recent article opens up a crucial discussion on the relationship between R&D and innovation. He argues that innovation is essential for R&D to generate tangible value, raising questions about the sustainability of R&D without commercialisation. R&D lays the groundwork for scientific advancements, but without innovation, these remain theoretical or underutilised. Innovation transforms R&D outputs into practical applications that drive market growth and solve real-world problems. Without this bridge to the market, R&D struggles to attract sustained funding, as stakeholders increasingly demand outcomes with a clear return on investment. Recent developments across various industries illustrate how innovation is essential to commercialising R&D. For example, Li-S Energy, supported by a Commercialisation and Growth grant, is developing high-tolerance lithium foil for next-generation batteries. This exemplifies how strategic funding can bring groundbreaking R&D from the lab to the market. In healthcare, Electrogenics Laboratories received funding to develop the an innovative patient radiation dosimeter. This product highlights the importance of innovation in transitioning from research to a market-ready solution. In the tech sector, Brandsec Pty Ltd is creating Unphish, a tool to address omni-channel threats, with government support. This project shows how R&D-driven solutions can meet urgent market demands. Agriculture also benefits from such innovation. Forager Automation Pty Ltd’s robotic blueberry harvester, backed by a grant, demonstrates how R&D in automation can significantly boost agricultural productivity. Biotechnology sees a similar impact. Cauldron Molecules Pty Ltd, establishing a precision fermentation facility, underscores how innovation drives sustainable production methods that could transform the industry. The debate over whether funding should prioritise R&D or innovation is complex. R&D requires substantial investment to explore new ideas, often without immediate returns. However, innovation refines, tests, and brings these ideas to market. A balanced approach ensures that robust R&D pushes the boundaries of knowledge while innovation channels discoveries into commercially viable products. Government programs like Australia’s Industry Growth Program play a critical role in this transition. These grants help businesses commercialise their research, ensuring that innovations reach the market. Success stories show how well-targeted funding drives success across sectors, helping Australian businesses lead in cutting-edge technologies. While R&D is the foundation of innovation, without the latter, the former may not be sustainable long-term. Both R&D and innovation need strategic funding and policy support to maximise their impact. How should governments balance support between R&D and innovation? What role should policy play in shaping the innovation landscape across different industries? Acton Institute

Eco-innovation is more than simply designing green products and green packaging as it entails improvements in business operations and processes to improve efficiency and to reduce costs and waste significantly. Part two of the PhD course on Ecological Challenges for the next decade is taking place this week for the PhD students associated with the Gothenburg U-GOT KIES centre, with most enrolled as PhD students at the Unit for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The course is given by Professor Nathalie Lazaric, Guest Professor at Gothenburg U-GOT KIES (Centre on knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystems) and Professor at Université Côte d'Azur, France, and she stresses the importance of implementing Eco-innovation. - Although the opportunities that eco-innovation offers are clear, greater effort is needed to close the gap with regards to implementation. To be truly effective, Eco-innovation needs to be adopted on a larger scale and with greater consistency across different countries and different sectors. Combining science excellence and strong business acumen should inspire others from academia to follow. "The biggest gift is being able to make a huge difference in a short time", said by Morten Ø. Andersen (founder and CEO of Bioomix) about making the move from academia to creating a growth company. Your transition, Morten and Julia Magdalena Østergaard Andersen, from academia to founding a company is truly inspiring. Your bold leap demonstrates not only your innovative spirit but also your unwavering determination to translate knowledge into real-world impact. And your courage venturing into the unknown is a testament to your entrepreneurial mission of "developing organic and sustainable microbial products for global challenges and help end-users achieve economic and environmental sustainability". It's evident that your expertise and passion will continue to drive Bioomix forward. For many reasons, and not the least due to your ambitions, realism and understanding of the work required to build a successful company - going beoynd science. Personally, I truly recognize Mortens experience having moved from corporate industry to management consulting to venture investing myself. Results of decision making are seen immediately when working in and with growth companies. #DeepTech #Science #Companybuilding #Impact Jakob Rybak-Andersen Marianne Hyltoft Søren Jessen Nielsen Agnethe Leonora Hjarnø Boysen Jacob Graves Beck PSV DeepTech PreSeed Ventures https://lnkd.in/dBKRJx5P

Yesterday VIB officially opened its state-of-the-art bio-incubator in Ghent. A new hub for innovative start-up companies, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The EU is supporting this project for good reason: ✔ The incubator, part of the renowned biotech cluster in Ghent, plays a key role in research and scientific excellence, economic progress, and local and regional employment. ✔ With the European Green Deal, we want to transform Europe into a resource-efficient and climate-neutral economy by 2050. Biotechnology comes with innovative solutions, to rethink our agriculture, our food chain, our energy supply chain. ✔ Health and biotechnology are among the critical technologies where Europe needs to defend its strategic autonomy. We need smart and targeted investments to keep our technological leadership, remain attractive for business and limit our dependency Stakes are high, but looking at the impressive track record of VIB of the past 30 years, we are confident that the investment is well spent. Thanks to our partners at VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship and the City Of Ghent for preparing and co-managing this funding project. https://lnkd.in/eV9uBpkR Christine Durinx Wim Goemaere Dr. Ajit Shetty Stéphane Beel Hilde Schuddinck #EUinmyRegion #EU4BE
