Topic of the week: transatlantic deregulatory frenzy 🔸In the US the victory of Donald Trump has opened a new direction what concerns the orientation of government policy, which can be characterised as an ultra-Reaganite campaign against state intervention in the economy. 🔸Visit of Argentinian President Javier Milei in Mar-a-Lago symbolised the new spirit which imperils the US economy and society. The self-styled „anarcho-capitalist” Milei since his entry generated industrial decline and sharply rising poverty in Argentina. For Trump, Milei is a MAGA person. https://lnkd.in/dfud8y59 🔸Ursula von der Leyen’s rightward turn and the rise of the EPP—ECR policy axis also pushed the endeavour of simplification, or more concretely, deregulation, higher on the EU agenda as well. Rekindling the paradigm once represented by a High Level Group led by Edmund Stoiber risks prescribing the wrong medicine again. https://lnkd.in/dbXrMVhx 🔸Former liberal MEP Marietje Schaake has written a remarkable book about the myth of Silicon Valley and how technology companies use „innovation” as a disguise for resisting regulation. Today this amounts to a „tech coup” to which the Trump revolution is opening the gates wide. Schaake's book carries very important warnings for EU policy makers searching for the true meaning of innovation and the right tools to boost it. https://lnkd.in/dkHAtH7M More observations from me here: https://lnkd.in/d5ek43Mz

This is totally unacceptable in my opinion, and in the opinion of SuperSpreader on SubStack. Ten days ago, the German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck appeared at a meeting of the German Council on Foreign Relations, where he spoke on “competitiveness, climate protection and polarisation.” There, he spent a lot of time explaining that Europe really needs to do something about the fact that people can say whatever they want on the internet: "I won’t make a secret of the fact that I believe this unregulated form of social media is no longer acceptable. In my opinion, we must be more vigilant and consistent in ensuring that, firstly, the algorithms are made transparent; and, secondly, that they are also regulated in such a way that the space for democracy – well, the ‘social’ in social media, which of course also has strengths – is not eliminated. We cannot, as liberal democracies, allow billionaires who support Donald Trump in the US to define discourse in Europe with their idea of communication, or with Chinese technology – which is itself banned or regulated in China. That would be truly blind. That is why polarisation is not just a buzzword about the state of society, but in my view it is a political mandate to look closely at how polarisation arises. And if – and this is the second point about polarisation that we need to talk about – if it is deliberately used to destabilise society, and at least we have to admit the thought in this day and age, then we have every reason to resist it politically and to continue this defensive democracy across social media as well. There are plenty of ways to do that, maybe we don’t yet have enough, but a strict application of the DSA, the Digital Services Act, is the least we need in Germany." Would it not be easier for evil men like Robert Habeck to stop telling lies and trying to control ordinary people trying to run their lives?

As global conflicts escalate and markets fragment, the need to understand the impact of geopolitics on business has never been more critical. This year's Geopolitics and Business conference host by the Geopolitics & Business Club at London Business School provided profound insights into how businesses can navigate and thrive in these turbulent times. Some of the highlights were: 🔸 Election Impacts on Business: 2024's super-election year could reshape global market dynamics, with shifts in EU and US politics poised to redefine international trade policies and alliances. Understanding these changes is crucial for businesses aiming to mitigate risks and leverage emerging opportunities. 🔸 AI and Global Governance: With AI's expanding role in society, there's a pressing need for a global governance framework to manage its impacts, particularly in safeguarding democratic processes and curbing weaponisation. 🔸 Energy Security and Sustainability: Post-Ukraine invasion, the rush for energy security is aligned with the net zero transition. Businesses should align their strategies with these dual aims to enhance resilience and maintain competitive advantage on the global stage. At H/Advisors Cicero, we equip businesses with the strategic insights necessary to navigate these complex dynamics. Our expertise in global politics, scenario planning, and strategic communication positions our clients to not only adapt but lead in their industries. 🔗 Interested in more insights f or how these trends could affect your business? Excited to share the publication of our policy brief "The Challenges of Governing AI-Elections: Shared Principles and Collaboration for Latin American Democratic Processes" in the Global Solutions Journal 10(2024). In the brief, Julia Pomares and I explore the intersection of AI-generated content and democratic processes, and argue that country-based and short-term solutions are insufficient in addressing the challenges AI poses to electoral processes in LATAM. We propose five practical policy recommendations highlighting regional collaboration's importance in establishing ethical frameworks for AI use during election cycles. Journal, Issue 10 https://lnkd.in/dSz2vf68 Our article https://lnkd.in/g8w96qjZ Print copies of the journal will also be disseminated at the Global Solutions Summit, the World Policy Forum, on May 6-7, 2024, in Berlin. The #GSS2024 is an international conference aimed at addressing key policy challenges facing the G20, G7, and other global governance fora. This year's theme is "Moving Beyond the Crisis: Mobilizing Change for Global Prosperity." Through it, we want to better understand what is holding us back, and how we can ramp up progress. as the Democratic Party does some soul-searching following this year's election, it's a good time to remember that, just 25 years ago, their party and president actually favored pro-freedom policies that helped give rise to the Information Revolution. If they are serious about a broad-based "abundance agenda," the party needs to revisit the principles and policies that the Clinton Administration sketched out not all that long ago and apply them more broadly. Here is my ode to that Clinton/Gore vision of information abundance and what it meant for America in terms of innovation opportunities, economic growth, and expanded freedom of speech. In my opinion, it is the greatest public policy success story of the past quarter century. https://lnkd.in/eGVwa8Gv #techpolicy

the paper makes two key claims. First, EU platform regulation can more helpfully be framed as manifesting an ongoing shift away from progressive neoliberalism and towards neo-illiberalism. Fundamental rights and liberal-democratic norms which previously legitimised EU policy are increasingly sacrificed in favour of unrestrained state surveillance and private-sector-led innovation. Second, methodologically, researchers should not only consider how these laws are being implemented currently, but also look ahead to an increasingly-plausible ‘far-right Europe’.

Another good issue of the Economist this week. Lots going on in the world, big and small. “How to deal with the hard-right threat in Germany”: A third of Germans now prefer a party of the extremes. The combined far right and far left in France, Italy, and Austria have similar support. One impact has been unwieldy coalitions attempting to exclude these parties from government, which may take months to form and may be ineffective at governing, driving more people to the extremes. This editorial’s main policy recommendation is for the center to become tougher on migration. An interesting lesson for the US as well. https://econ.st/4dTSeSe “Liberalism is far from dead in China”: This longer read describes the extent of support within China for free thought and individual rights. It argues that backing for such values has been increasing since the government’s failed zero-Covid policy and a weaker economy, and that they flourish more (though not solely) in cities like Chengdu, away from Beijing. Dissent remains minimal and the article isn’t exactly optimistic, but we tend to think of China as monolithic, and I appreciate the nuance portrayed here. https://econ.st/3AWbekp “As Brazil bans Elon Musk’s X, who will speak up for free speech”: 11 years at Freedom House made me a bit of a free speech absolutist, but I also like how this article splices a topic that is sensitive on both the left and the right. Restricting Telegram (France) and TikTok (US) is justifiable, it says, while the cases against X both in Brazil and elsewhere stray from protecting the population into waging the culture war through the courts. Bottom line: We should not determine which speech is ok based on which speech we like. https://econ.st/3zdAMsv “Commercial ties between the Gulf and Asia are deepening”: As the Gulf monarchies diversify their economies away from oil, they are also diversifying their foreign relationships. Asian companies are building infrastructure and factories in the Gulf, while the monarchies are investing in Asian tech and businesses. Gulf trade ties with the US and Europe are weakening, and the US in particular is wary of Gulf-China connections. https://econ.st/4efWLOA “The Onion’s cutting edge: paper”: Ok, I’m being a bit self-indulgent here because I find both the The Onion and this article about it hilarious. But two points about the satirical newspaper’s return to print are intriguing. First, satire gets lost on the internet amidst crazy people whose posts look like satire yet sadly are not. And second, it is challenging to maintain a distinctive brand when social media pools single articles from so many sources. And also, “Only through print can we tell imbeciles like yourself precisely how to think in a single, unswerving voice.” https://econ.st/4gb6wz7

2wFake News and lies. Inflation is down in Argentina. You fear that. 33'000 people at the EU commission and a lot of corruption. DSA is unconstitutional. EU is in decline due to overregulation. This is a museum compared to the US. Thanks.
