When flow at all valve opening positions is measured under conditions of constant inlet pressure, the resulting flow characteristic is referred to as the inherent flow characteristic. This means that the behavior of the valve is determined without considering external factors, such as variations in the system’s pressure drop, allowing for a consistent basis of comparison. Flow control valves are designed to provide predictable and specific flow characteristics, and the most common types are quick opening, square root, linear, and equal percentage. Each of these flow characteristics is tailored to meet different operational needs. Quick opening valves deliver a large increase in flow with minimal valve movement, making them ideal for on/off applications.
