CEO of Non-Profit That Provided Mentoring Services to Public School Students Pleads Guilty to Fraudulently Obtaining COVID Benefits Reginald Foster Jr., of the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to fraudulently applying for millions of dollars in COVID-19 jobless benefits.

A colleague asked me today about serving on a non-profit board. Such important work, but I think most people don't know how to get started: I have been on a non-profit board of some sort for much of my professional career. It is a calling for me; I'm actually on two right now. I find I can't usually get the fulfillment at a moral or ethical level that I seek in a professional job, so a non-profit board is the way I meet that requirement. First, the best way to find an org to be on the board is to find an org that you support and like the mission of. My colleague was looking for animal, queer, immigrant and indigenous interests in the Kansas City area. Also, read their website. Find the board of directors and approach the board chair or if there's a committee that you can find that does board recruitment and tell them about you and your interest and ask how you can get involved at a board level. All boards need to add board members, and they are looking for people who have an interest in the organization and can help them meet their goals. Some boards and board members help with fundraising, some help with events, some are just a governing board, there are many different ways to serve. Serving on a non-profit board is an easy and fulfilling way to give back to your community. How do you give back?

Last night was very humbling. I had the opportunity to return to the place that gave me the tools to restart my life, and I will forever be grateful for that. Since it is Movember, which focuses on Mens Health, I have a story to share. I recently passed the 6yr mark of sobriety, but it felt a bit different this year. The first 5 years of sobriety, I took it very seriously and put all my effort into changing my frame of mind from very negative to positive. After receiving my 5-year medallion last year, things changed. I started taking every aspect of my life for granted because my life on paper looked great. I didn't take my sobriety and spirituality serious, my ego was telling me, "Jeff, you don't need that anymore. You got this." I was isolating myself and didn't reach out to my positive influences, which led to months of depression and recently planning my demise. Normal people would say, "You have a great life, how could you be depressed?" I suffer from depression because I'm not one of the normal people. I've suffered from depression since I was 13 years old, but fortunately, I now have the tools to recover. I share this because many men don't have the tools available. Today my good friend Dan Koval gave me a tour of his company, Handi-Crafters Packaging Services in Thorndale, PA (www.hcocenter.org). This manufacturing facility provides work for adults with disabilities, giving them a chance to earn money and make a living while delivering simple goods and services. Pictured here is a new friend of mine who is helping to package Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty (my tween son has “invested” a lot of money in their putty!). There are two ways to help. 1. Most important: These folks need work to do! If your company has some simple manufacturing or packaging that these folks could do to help, it literally means the world to them. 2. Pretty darn important also: They need donations from corporate sponsors (they are a non-profit) to keep the hope alive. As a missionary family, we care for those in need and our Catholic business owner clients who we serve are donating into this mission called Drawn To The Truth Missions.
