Can satellite and telecommunications networks come together in a single cohesive communications ecosystem? 5G is a key accelerant in making this possible, through a variety of related standards, including 3GPP’s Release 17 (Rel-17) in 2021, which introduced 5G NTN and opened 5G to non-terrestrial networks for the first time. Learn about how innovations like 5G NTN and Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) are changing the landscape of broadband communications, including exciting new capabilities like regenerative payloads, cloud-native computing and network slicing. Great to see that the #3GPP #NTN Standards are nominated for Satellite Technology of the Year. The Via Satellite Technology of the Year award recognizes breakthrough technology achievements and how they impact the industry. Over the past several years, the satellite industry has engaged proactively with the mobile industry and vertical stakeholders at 3GPP and other forums to ensure that satellite technologies can be fully integrated into the 5G ecosystem. These efforts have resulted in a major breakthrough: the successful expansion and adaptation of the 3GPP standards to incorporate non-terrestrial networks (NTN) starting with Release 17. This work on integrating #satellite communications into #5G started in 3GPP SA1. Great to now see it has come to a conclusion with a suite of standards ready for implementation. Even greater to see that this work is getting recognition with this nomination for the Via Satellite Technology of the Year award. Please help to turn this nomination into actually getting the award by voting. The vote is open to the public, please follow the link. https://lnkd.in/ebUDbC4K

D2D services using NGSO constellations is something we all look forward to as alternative to ground based Terrestrial infrastructure for network access. There is no such service switching seen around where a device has option to prefer satellite based infrastructure over the ground based infrastructure for BB internet services. This situation looks to be still far away to happen. This has lot of issues that may have to be qualified before any level playing jeopardy for the terrestrial networks crop up. D2D access using NGSO constellations is neither cost effective nor regulated vis a vis Terrestrial networks. Availability of spectrum and that too exclusive to let micro satellite gateways coming up just like mobile towers is sketchy and to call out on this basis bringing level playing regulations by telecom experts is highly far fetched thought. Satellite based services to supplement terrestrial networks is not seen anywhere as a commercial viable proposition. Spectrum auctioning on exclusive basis to satellite networks to establish gateways on a large scale and that too to bring down commercial viability of mobile service towers shall require forums to burn tons of midnight oil to bring facts on public plateforms.

This idea is mind blowing when you stop to think about it. IMO, small satellites & optical communications are key to building & sustaining a multiplanetary civilization. Overcoming the tyranny of limited RF spectrum will be one of the key technological breakthroughs of our lifetimes.
Radio spectrum in space is like real estate on Earth: it is finite and a strategic commodity. Until the advent of optical communications, RF spectrum will remain a contested commodity in space. https://ow.ly/WXHi50TzG5X

Strengthening telecom resilience: Tackling GNSS challenges and timing in 5G networks At the 2023 Civil Global Positioning System Service Interface Committee (CGSIC) Meeting held in Baltimore, key global players gathered to discuss the future of positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) systems, focusing on the resilience of critical infrastructure dependent on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). The meeting highlighted increasing concerns around GNSS vulnerability to interference and jamming. Speaker spotlight: Magnus Danielson on GNSS challenges and solutions Magnus Danielson, Senior Technologist at Net Insight, presented "Operational Challenges to Telecom and Broadcast Networks in Their GNSS Usage, and Mitigation Techniques" at the event. He discussed: • The GPS UTC time hickup in January 2016, which disrupted equipment. • Real-life examples of GNSS jamming in regions like Northern Europe, the Black Sea, and the Middle East, affecting telecommunications and broadcasting. • Challenges in 5G networks, particularly timing issues that cause interference when synchronization is lost between networks. • Key threats to GNSS timing: jamming, spoofing, and operational losses. • Mitigation strategies for telecom and broadcasting, such as using fixed links (microwave, fiber) alongside GPS for calibration, and employing robust synchronization solutions like Full Timing Support (FTS) and enhanced Partial Timing Support (ePTS) over wide area networks (WAN). Danielson's insights emphasized the urgent need for resilient PNT systems, especially as 5G networks expand and GNSS independence becomes critical for various sectors. https://lnkd.in/dCGwZqP9 #TelecomResilience #GNSSChallenges #5GInnovation #TechLeadership #PNTSolutions #NetworkSecurity #TelecomFuture
