"Sadness exists to make us appreciate happiness" is reductive. Sadness reflects our value system. Sadness forces us inward, to make slower movements, and to reflect carefully about our experience. In this process sadness shows us what we truly value, and is information to carry forward with our future choices. And yes, that can mean driving us toward choices more aligned with our values that will lead us to happiness as a byproduct. This refining process shapes our character. Sadness is not a problem, sadness gives us context about the problem. Emotions are information.
