🧠 Happy World Mental Health Awareness Day 🧠 In an op-ed by Alexa Knight, Director of England at the Mental Health Foundation, she details how The Labour Party must go the distance on preventing poor mental health. With 2 million people on mental health waiting lists, millions more across the country would benefit from the support but don't qualify for NHS help. With Labour's manifesto promising to “change the NHS so that it becomes not just a sickness service, but able to prevent ill heath in the first place,” the new government needs to support this pledge through ensuring workforce is trauma-informed, restoring the public health grant and general funding, and recognise how delivery a truly preventative approach to mental health would be immense. Just a minute. That's all it takes to make a world of difference for ourselves and those around us. In our busy world, finding a moment to pause and connect with ourselves can seem impossible. But let me tell you a story about how important it is to stop for a second, connect with yourself, and do something that makes you happy. Sometimes, I just need a breather. Just a minute to step outside, take a deep breath of fresh air, and clear my mind. When I feel overwhelmed, a quick run works wonders for my mood and mental well-being. Just one minute to lace up my shoes, and I'm on my way to feeling better. Today it's #WorldMentalHealthDay 🌍 and I'm reminded that while I can find this time, many people can't afford to wait. Over 2 million people in the UK are stuck on waiting lists for NHS mental health services, many are on the brink, needing urgent help. For them, every minute matters more and mental support can't wait! Yet, in just one minute, you can make a big difference. It takes only a moment to read this post and another to sign a petition urging the UK Government to act. Mind is calling for urgent support: https://lnkd.in/efJCydHT Here's a wild fact: 1 in 4 of us in Britain will face a mental health challenge each year. And since 2017, the numbers for young people have almost doubled. Today, take a minute for yourself and a minute to support others. Let's make mental health a priority for all. As an Associate of the Design in Mental Health Network I wanted to share my support for the Manifesto for a mentally healthier nation. Mental health in the UK is getting worse. Sickness absence due to mental illness is soaring, rates of mental health difficulties are increasing, and already overstretched vital services are struggling to meet rising demands. It is important to act now to help turn the tide. Along with over 60 organisations, concrete policies have been set out that we want to see adopted as part of a ten-year, cross-government mental health strategy. We want every political party to adopt these actions in their manifestos ahead of the forthcoming general election. This is an important piece of work, so if you have an interest in helping secure a mental healthier nation, regardless of your background or socio-economic status, please grab a coffee, find out more and support the manifesto. https://lnkd.in/e7xjXcrS

As part of The Vital 5 initiative funded by Social Enterprise Kent , we are focusing on mental health, specifically the impact of stress on our well-being. Mayah's Legacy has developed the "Mapping Your Mind & Heart" booklet, a straightforward guide designed to highlight and raise awareness about the effects of stress on the body. This booklet will be shared with participants during family matters wellbeing morning and You matter retreat morning in partnership with my birth support CIC. Additionally, both this booklet and our self-discovery booklet will be included in a pack delivered to over 250 families. What is the vital 5 initiative? The Vital 5 initiative advocates for people, communities and organisations to make improvements in/to five factors that have a major impact on health at an individual and population level. NHS England believe that reducing obesity and harmful drinking, stopping smoking, controlling blood pressure, and identifying and improving poor mental health will help prevent ill health, promote good health, and improve detection, management and treatment of existing conditions.

Recent independent research found that some of the key barriers people face when seeking help with their mental health include unclear and confusing online information and uncertainty about what support they may need. Therefore, a list of services can be unhelpful. To address this, we have been involved in an important piece of collaborative work aimed at improving mental health signposting information for adults in Sussex. Working with peers in the NHS, our Local Authorities and the VCSE sector, along with people with lived experience, consistent mental health signposting information has been designed to make it easy to find and access the help they need. 👉 If you or someone you know are looking for mental health and wellbeing support and are not sure what is the best route of support for your condition, please take a look at the options listed in the image or check out our website: https://lnkd.in/eRFJt2Ra NHS Sussex| East Sussex County Council | UOK Mental Health Support| West Sussex County Council| | West Sussex Mind| Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust| Lewes District Council| South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust| Grassroots Suicide Prevention| Sussex Police| Hastings Borough Council #MentalHealthSupport #PartnershipWorking #MentalHealthCommunications #SussexMentalHealthSupport

Mental health must be a priority at this General Election. In the run up to election day, we’ll be stepping up our campaigning. We'll be highlighting the need for investment and action that will improve access to therapy and expand paid opportunities for therapists. We’ll continue to demonstrate why and how the next Government must increase funding for accessible mental health support in the NHS, schools, community organisations and workplaces. Read more about how we're working on your behalf to put counselling and psychotherapy on the agenda ➡️ https://orlo.uk/h6yfZ #GeneralElection #Counselling # MentalHealth

The global maternal mental health crisis is deepened by stigma, a lack of awareness, and limited access to care. Initiatives like the Shades of Blue Project play a vital role in drawing attention to these issues and advocating for improved support and resources for mothers and birthing individuals, striving to diminish the stigma surrounding maternal mental health conditions. On World Health Day, acknowledging the work of organizations like ours shines a light on the urgent need for healthcare systems that integrate mental health support for mothers and birthing persons. It reminds us that health is a broad concept, necessitating a comprehensive approach that includes addressing mental health needs, particularly among vulnerable groups. We remain committed to driving change and pushing forward with our mission to MAKE SHIFT HAPPEN and transform the future. #worldhealthday #TheConversationContinues ##BMMHW2024 #BMMHS2024 #ShineTheLight #WeAreTheExpertsToo #MaternalMentalHealth

Did you know – • In the UK there are roughly 6000 deaths from suicide each year, of which about 100 are in Derbyshire. This has a ripple effect on families, friends, colleagues, healthcare workers, and the community. • The rates of suicide have not gone down at all in past 15 years and are rising in certain groups. • Men are 3-4 times more likely to die by suicide. Suicide is the highest cause of death in young men. Self-harm is the strongest predictor of later suicide and is now more common in young people. • Primary Care is where 90% of all mental health related consultations take place. We are a looking for someone to make a positive impact on patients’ mental health and become part of a network of Suicide Awareness Facilitators across Derbyshire. To address Mental Health issues and help people recover, we must involve the family and friends who are usually the caregiver to the person. A caregiver or carer is someone actively caring for a person with a mental illness, be it a family member or friend. Educating this set of people and encouraging them helps to decrease relapse rates, ensure better adherence to hospital medication and reduce stigmatization of people with mental health challenges. This can as well reduce hospital admissions/episodes and reduce symptoms. I could say the cycle of mental health care is vicious because most times, carer are so invested in attending to the person's with mental health issue that they totally forgot about their own health. We must as a society act and work together to ensure a sound mental health. #MentalHealthAwareness #Act #Caregiver #WorkTogether #VIP23 #YPPH The Academy of Public Health West African Institute of Public Health
