The Future of direct sales How direct sales empower farmers and enhance consumer relationships, fostering sustainability and profitability. Direct sales empower farmers by allowing them to sell directly to consumers, which enhances their profit margins and reduces reliance on intermediaries. This model enables farmers to retain a larger share of the sales price, often resulting in increased income—up to 30% more than traditional methods. Additionally, direct sales foster transparency and build trust with consumers, who prefer knowing the origins of their food. By utilizing e-commerce platforms, farmers can reach wider markets, ensuring fresher produce and promoting sustainable practices, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers alike. #DirectSales #SustainableFarming #SupportLocal #FarmToTable #KnowYourFarmer #BuyLocal

Not a lot of people know what it is that we “Market Agents” do. It is a challenging and dynamic role, with the single biggest skill required to succeed being the ability to build & maintain relationships with people. Our primary function is to build relationships with fresh produce producers in SA 🇿🇦 in order to sell and market their product in our agencies on the local market. The farmer sends his produce to our agency on the municipal fresh produce market, we then establish pricing based on quality, class, size and volume available on the market on that given day. Once we have established the price we then market the product to the buyers who come in daily, these are everyone from wholesalers, national retailers, hawkers, informal traders, restauranteurs, and the general public. It is our responsibility to achieve the best possible return on the producers product. This is a massive responsibility. How well we do dictates whether the producer makes a profit or a loss. This is why strong personal relationships which are built on trust and understanding are imperative. A big part of your ability to build these relationships and secure a partnership with a producer is “Face-to-Face” interaction. In todays fast paced world driven by ever improving technology and the convenience of connection through smart phones and the internet, people often become complacent and lazy. Often avoiding Face-to-Face interaction and even a phone call. It’s far easier to type a message and wait for a written response avoiding direct personal contact. Farmers are often conservative and traditional people. They are often from a long line of farmers with traditional values. They appreciate Face-to-Face contact so they can establish for themselves and their instincts if you are to be trusted or not. You can’t pick up on personality traits over the phone, you need visual cues, body language, eye contact. Another benefit of going out to see these farmers in person, outside of the obvious ability to see their farm and operation, is that it shows the farmer a level of respect and commitment. Being prepared to drive 3000kms across the country on terrible roads to some of the most remote and rural areas, spending your time and money to come have a 30min conversation shows the farmer that his business means something to you. They appreciate that very much. This industry is not for everyone, they often say it’s got to be in your blood. Waking up at 2:30am everyday to be at work by 3:30am - 4:00am is a challenge. Travelling multiple times a year, spending time away from your family and often spending hours and hours on the road, often through harsh terrain. Your phone blowing up from 4am all day and very often outside of normal business hours. High stress. Dealing with hundreds of people everyday. It’s a lot. But I fucking LOVE IT ❤️

Just finished reading an insightful article from Harvard Business Review called “Toward Healthier B2B Relationships” by Bryan Hochstein, Clay Voorhees, Ross Johnson, and Neal McCoy (@INFORMS). It really resonated with me as I’ve been driving product growth for service software related features at HubSpot. Key takeaways that I'll keep in mind for both school and work: 💡 Data-driven predictions are critical for anticipating customer needs 💡 Health scores are a powerful tool for improving retention 💡 Iterative feedback loops drive better outcomes and product success 💡 Customers care about more than tech buzzwords Check out the article if you're interested! #UCDavis_MSBA @INFORMS

Many food delivery services were unprofitable for a long time and have withdrawn from the market. One of the most successful companies in this market is knuspr.de. Intelligent #communication and #pricing play a major role here: 🏷️ Selective special offers appeal to Bargain Hunters because they give them the feeling that you can always get a good deal. The total savings are displayed at the end of the ordering process, which provides an additional incentive to order. ♻️ Special offers are often linked to conditions, e.g. products with an approaching best-before date. This gives customers the feeling that they are doing something good by saving food from being thrown away. 👍 The every-day-low-price promise appeals to less involved customers and Risk Avoiders who are worried about paying too much. If you are unhappy with your purchase, a 100% refund is offered - this takes away the worry of making the wrong decision, especially with fresh products that you can't look at or touch. 🚚 Delivery is usually free, but certain small time slots are subject to a charge, so that the added value of urgent orders is monetized for Price Accepters. 💳 A monthly Premium subscription enables free deliveries below the regular minimum order value and offers the reservation of certain delivery periods. This retains loyal Routine Buyers. With all these measures, knuspr achieves an average basket value of 80 €; 16% of those who know knuspr order there regularly, (both figures are about twice as high as with competitors), knuspr is profitable in many cities and grows at around 25% per year.
