Target Corp. is set to add a new store in the summer of 2026 in the fast growing Little Elm area. The location will anchor a 225,000-square-foot shopping center planned at the southwest corner of U.S. Route 380 and Ryan Spiritas Parkway. The shopping center will be named Bates Towne Crossing "to acknowledge the property’s history and create a sense of local connection to the development. Little Elm is seeing a proliferation of retail and grocery development. There's an Aldi grocery store nearby and Sprouts Farmers Market is scheduled to move in on the other side of U.S. 380 from the Target, next to a Denton ISD elementary school. Arby's and Shell will also join the neighborhood. H-E-B owns the land to the west of Target, however it is unclear if the company plans to build on it. The company opened its second Frisco location in August, about 5 miles away from the empty plot of land. H-E-B has been known for buying and holding lots of real estate as part of its site selection and investment process.

Director of Economic Development Charles Bichara reports that, in a groundbreaking multi-million dollar agreement, the City of Middleburg Heights and Meijer Inc. have reached a deal for the Michigan-based retailer to purchase a 15-acre parcel in the Southland Business District. Mayor Matt Castelli announced that Meijer will purchase the former Middleburg Heights Sears property with plans for a future 160,000-square-foot supercenter, with an additional 20,000-square-foot garden center, to bring back a one-stop shopping experience to Middleburg Heights. This project is in the early stages, and Meijer plans on submitting its development application for the site in the coming months.

🚫 Today's Discovery: The "No Hawkers" Sign 🚫 While out on appointments today, I came across a sign that read "No Hawkers" and was curious as to the history behind this phrase. Traditionally, "hawkers" refers to individuals who travel about selling goods, typically with loud advertising. This term has roots stretching back to the Middle Ages, where hawkers played a crucial role in rural commerce, bringing goods and news to isolated communities. However, as cities grew and retail shifted to more established storefronts, the presence of hawkers began to clash with the evolving urban landscape. The "No Hawkers" sign is a relic of a time when businesses and homeowners sought to deter these itinerant vendors from soliciting in certain areas, aiming to maintain privacy and reduce the disruption caused by the often loud and persistent selling techniques. I was saving my yearly LinkedIn post for my 3 year anniversary in a few weeks, but today’s launch of Brooklyn Storehouse is a far more exciting milestone (first iconic, stateside partnership- watch this space!). Sharing! I found this Santa candy dish in the dollar store. Being cheap, I started not to buy him. But then, thought I better buy him now. So I bought one for Kornr Store and one for my home. In the past few years, I’ve noticed more Black Santa inspired decorations and wrapping paper sold in stores and that’s a good thing. That wasn’t the case a few years ago. Images like this Black Santa are important because we tend to believe what we see and what we are told rather than what we know for ourselves. Diversity, inclusion, equity, community are popular words we now use not really knowing and/or understanding the everyday personal costs, challenges and pain that lays beneath now culturally acceptable terms. But, you don’t know really know the inequality of an experience until it happens to you. In my opinion, Christmas time demonstrates the most powerful images of how life is imagined for the majority of the population while ignoring the rest of the humans. This holiday season, I challenge you to pay more attention to the human images presented to you while you shop and celebrate with friends and family. Images send powerful messages without saying a word. This same behavior happens continually in commercial real estate and supportive industries, like urban planning and architecture (I love y’all, but.). People get excited about new real estate development projects in and near downtowns and their adjacent business districts. And, we love the beautiful, glossy conceptual drawings and marketing. But, often I don’t see people that look like me. And that my friends is dangerous, because it subtly conveys a strong message to me and everyone else that Black and Brown people don’t belong there (that place, those level of supportive amenities and businesses) without saying a word. Inclusion, diversity and equity are just words. Santa is just a plastic candy dish. But there is this unspoken reality that happens when I walk into some places that aren’t use to seeing people like me. Something to think about, before you plan that next new shiny real estate development project. Consider the images (people and pictures), your team and professional circles present. And, now that you have this new perspective, know that your efforts will help dilute powerful, outdated mindsets and practices. Glad I got my Santa candy dishes. It’s Love Your High Street week (18-25th November) and as many of you know the High Street is something I’m passionate about supporting for soooo many reasons. I’ve worked in this industry for over 30 years and still passionate about it. Have you visited your local high street recently? Have you bought from it, maybe met for a coffee, had your hair cut, looked in travel agents for your next holiday or any of the other many different businesses that are there working hard to serve you. It’s not just about the business for me, although that’s massively important obviously as we need to support them so they can continue to support our communities, our local economy and their employees. For me it’s the whole social experience, it’s where we learn as children to engage with others, to be excited by the colours, the designs, the sights and smells that inspire us. It’s where we meet others, we switch off from our phones and have a coffee with friends, or enjoy a meal or drink. It’s where we catch up with our hairdresser, the salon, the barber and chat about life, sharing stories and making ourselves feel better by looking after ourselves. It’s where we look in travel shop windows, wondering where to go next, where we can talk to people who know how to help, to actually talk…not on a screen online. It’s where we pop into our local corner shop for the things you’ve forgotten on the way home, or perhaps that specialist bakers for a tasty treat, or local butcher for a locally sourced produce. It’s where you go to get your eyes tested after spending too long looking at screens these days I’m convinced we all need glasses more than ever. I could go on, but you get the idea. I know there’s lots of talk of doom & gloom on our high streets, but there’s so much good stuff out there, especially our independents, who need our support. If I ask one thing of you this week, it’s to please visit your high street, if you’ve not been for a while, check it out, find something new & support our British High Street, they’re worth supporting! Fascinating article on vacation commercial spaces in New York City with some great data. It also includes some of the land use policy ideas NYC is considering. Thanks for sharing Chih-Wei Hsu! It makes me think about how Los Angeles should plan to activate some of its struggling commercial corridors as the Olympics approach. With some political will, commercial corridors with vacant spaces on the Eastside and South LA can be centers of prosperity. Our neighborhoods should be examples of how we can made lemonade (economic justice) out of lemons (the pandemic). Empty spaces can be more than just another big box retailer, they can be activated by community entrepreneurs and artists who dream of having their own brick and mortar. Where possible, these vacant spaces should be shepherded into community ownership.
