Exciting news. Rafeeq Jaffer and the CITANDA team have posted our first academic article with The Conversation Africa. One of CITANDA’s initiatives is to promote and increase visibility of research being conducted in the Department of Information Systems. The Conversation Africa is funded by the The National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) Fund and by 8 Public South African universities including the University of Cape Town. They specialize in assisting academics in translating academic research into easy-to-understand material with global reach. This makes The Conversation Africa a perfect partner to help share our research beyond academia and to include the wider public. Our article titled "Social media as a teaching tool: South African teachers talk about the new reality" by authors Rafeeq Jaffer (Department of Information Systems, University of Cape Town), Dr. Zane Davids (Department of Information Systems, University of Cape Town), and Prof. Lisa Seymour (Department of Information Systems, University of Cape Town) describes the challenges secondary school teachers face when using social media applications like WhatsApp as a teaching tool. They include access to devices, internet connectivity, security, skills, school policies and useful application features. We look forward to the continued growth of this valued partnership. Best regards, Yusraa Salie Zane Davids (CITANDA Social Media Team) #SocialMedia #Teachers #Students #Teaching #SchoolManagement #BasicEducation #WhatsApp #COVID19

Many might assume radio's golden age is behind us, but here in Nigeria, radio remains a vital source of information and entertainment. I recently came across this fascinating article exploring 100 years of radio in Africa, highlighting its evolution from government mouthpiece to a platform for "people's power." Radio is still so relevant in Nigeria because it reaches remote areas where internet access is limited. Radio stations cater to specific communities, fostering a sense of connection and cultural identity, and call-in shows and listener participation create a powerful space for dialogue and civic engagement. As an IP lawyer, I recognize the importance of protecting the creative works produced by radio broadcasters, including music, dramas, and original content. Strong IP protection fosters innovation and ensures creators are fairly compensated. What are your thoughts on the continued relevance of radio in Africa? Share your experiences in the comments below!

It is Assembly time! Lagos Studies Association (LSA) Years ago, Ololade (my late mother) told me, "You resemble those with whom you assemble." For this reason, among many, I selectively choose where I assemble. As a young girl in Nigeria, there was a sound you heard, and you know what event it is. When you hear gbagan gbagan, and you hear that head boy or head girl, you know what time and event it is. There are all kinds of assemblies, but it is that time for one of my favorite assemblies. The LSA conference, a beacon of intellectual exchange, is set to commence next week. Spanning from June 25 to 29, this event on the African continent is a unique platform featuring about 200 panels. Over 1,000 scholars and practitioners from 173 international and 110 Nigerian affiliations will participate, physically or virtually. The conference, as always, is designed to be open and accessible to all audiences, both physically and virtually. Our conference offers a rich array of professional development workshops covering a wide range of topics. From book and journal publishing, academic job hunting, women in academia, teaching pedagogy, fellowship application, and grant writing to graduate school application and experience, among others, there's something for everyone. We also have roundtables on 18 books that are at the cutting edge of scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, three film screenings, dance performances, and critical-celebratory panels on very senior scholars and canonical works that laid the foundation of newer studies. Dozens of panels on original paper presentations offer new perspectives on a spectrum of fields and subfields. Just click on the Zoom links embedded in each session to access While thinking of other panels to attend, consider my panels in the comment section.

𝐁𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬! As we navigate the complexities of our careers, it's easy to overlook the moments that define us. But what if I told you that a single email could change the trajectory of your life? For me, that email arrived in January 2022, and it's a moment I'll never forget. I'm thrilled to share that I received a citation from the Volta Region Students' Association University of Ghana chapter for my exceptional leadership as Deputy Public Relations Officer. This recognition isn't just a testament to my hard work; it's a reminder that curiosity and determination can unlock doors we never thought possible. When I received the appointment email from the then President Micheal Delali Tachie, I was hesitant. I had no idea what public relations entailed, and I nearly declined the offer. But something sparked within me and that was #curiosity. I decided to explore the opportunity to learn what it entails. Under the guidance of Theophilus Kedey, our #Public #Relations #Officer then, we revolutionized the association's identity within the University of Ghana community and beyond. We implemented #effective #communication and #PR #strategies that elevated our presence and impact. Today, I earned a LinkedIn Top Voice Badge for contributing to collaborative articles on public relations. It was all possible through the experiences and skills acquired earlier. This experience taught me that leadership isn't just about titles; it's about embracing the unknown and driving change. I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve and look forward to more avenues for growth, both professionally and personally. So, today I am encouraging you to let your #curiosity guide you to explore #opportunities. Do not decline them just because you have no expertise in that field. Rather, let #curiosity be a yardstick for your elevation in different endeavors. Tell me in the comments how curiosity has pushed you to explore opportunities in your life that have helped you to grow. #Leadership #PersonalGrowth #PublicRelations #UniversityOfGhana #VoltaRegionStudentsAssociation

ARTICLE by Eider Africa Executive Director, Aurelia Munene : Contextually Grounded Research in Postgraduate Research Training in Africa: Why and How. Approximately 70 percent of postgraduate students in Kenya never complete their studies within the stipulated time frame (see comments), with some extending their two-year projects to as long as eight years. Scholars attribute these delays to various factors, including; 1) Unresponsive or absent supervisors 2) Inability by students to apply insights from coursework to the development of research projects 3) Funding shortages 4) Inaccessibility of important scholarly materials 5) Difficulties finding appropriate non-predatory journal to publish their work Aurelia Munene, Eider Africa Limited Company Founder and keynote speaker at the 2024 SIPS conference, has dedicated some time pondering ways to enhance postgraduate research training. Here are some insights: https://lnkd.in/d2sUE3mR
