The differences between Internship, Practicum/Field Work (Praktek Kerja Lapangan - PKL), and Apprenticeship: A. Internship: ·    Internship is a training program undertaken by students or graduates in a professional work environment. ·    The primary purpose of an internship is to provide work experience and introduce the participants to the professional world. ·    Internships are usually temporary, with a varying duration, from a few weeks to several months. ·    Interns receive guidance and supervision from a mentor or supervisor at the workplace. ·    Internships can be done before or after graduation and may be a part of the academic curriculum. B.   Practicum/Field Work (Praktek Kerja Lapangan - PKL): ·    PKL is a mandatory program for students to fulfill academic requirements. ·    The main objective of PKL is to provide practical experience and apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom. ·    PKL is typically conducted over a shorter period, around 1-3 months. ·    PKL participants receive guidance and evaluation from both the educational institution and the host organization. ·    PKL is an integral part of the academic curriculum. C.   Apprenticeship: ·    Apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines classroom learning and on-the-job practice. ·    The primary aim of apprenticeship is to develop specific skills and competencies in a particular field. ·    Apprenticeships usually last for a longer duration, up to several years. ·    Apprentices receive a wage or compensation during the training program. ·    Apprenticeship involves a formal contract between the participant, the company, and the training institution. 17 week internship in HM programme is unique and expectional strategy adopted by IHMs to impart effective learning of hotel operation . This is quite different from engineering where IT is of 2 months in two slots, each between different years or internship in medical, paramedical where internship is after the completion of academics . It was a matured decision but it has not been taken by industry in right manner, as they became more shortsighted as taken this opportunity to use them as unskilled manpower . They should have taken this opportunity as steeping stone for training ,mentoring young professionals in such a organised manner so students became futuristic and energetic for opting career in Hospitality industry . IHMs also failed to impose strict guidelines on hotels and therefore hotels used and misused this golden opportunity and internship became worthless in some cases . In last one decade few good hotel chains and IHMs understood this and offered structured and constructive exposure to students and few IHMs specially in metro cities have better grip on internship output by continuously monitoring training that metro city. Still lot is needed to be done in this sphere by all stakeholders and good initiatives will turn the Intership more fruitful , if corporate of the hotels determine and stick to strict norms , then instructions will percolate to the bottom and internship will be more productive and will help in retaining the students in this noble and progressive career .
