Meet Joe Cullin!
Through a HIT Training Apprenticeship he became Head Brewer at Brewhouse & Kitchen, Southsea.
“As I grew in knowledge and confidence, I was invited to run a site in Chester which meant taking full responsibility for running my own brewery towards the end of my apprenticeship.”

Restaurant Youth Registered Apprenticeship. (RYRA)
Like many people, I started working in the industry in a dish room. My son just started at a place we love, doing the same. I asked him how he felt after his first shift. He said he liked it, and specifically he mentioned he has a good manager and trainer.
Many of us Gen Xers learned what we know now - through the informal mentorship of chefs and managers. Back at the turn of the century, I wish 17-year-old David had understood apprenticeship and that it was an option. Instead I put my head down and started washing dishes, and it was the beginning of a fantastic journey.
There is so much supported professional development available for newcomers to the industry in 2024. Apprenticeships are also available to people who have enjoyed successful employment and want to add formalized knowledge, skills, and abilities to their craft. Apprenticeships provide access to information and education that propels people up the ladders of promotion and economic mobility. We know this. Apprenticeships are cool like that.
Line Cook? Restaurant Manager? Kitchen Manager? Which apprenticeship(s) would work in your house? The NRAEF will cover Related and Training and Instruction for all three. (This is a big bucket full of industry recognized certifications and information!)
Apprenticeships mean #recruitment#retention#education#hospitality#skills#knowledge#craft
We know this. Did you know this? The data tells us this. Most importantly? Youth and students like Zymire tell us this. Youth are seeking earn while you learn opportunities through registered apprenticeships in restaurants and hotels across the country. Who do you need to share this information with?
We'd love to tell you more. Reach out to me or the team at the NRAEF to begin your journey! We can direct employers, apprentices, workforce development professionals and educators towards supported turn-key hospitality sector apprenticeships. HSRA and RYRA provide provide a powerful educational advantage to students and the businesses that employ them.

If anyone would like to understand more about how we can support your organisation to connect with young people who are seeking apprenticeship opportunities, please contact my colleague Alison Nichol.
The conversation below illustrates a recent experience for both the young person and the business 👇

Look at those smiling faces? 😀
That is the smiling face of a young person who has just been offered a roofing apprenticeship with Briggs Amasco Ltd, following a successful work placement.
Thank you to Allan D. (also looking smiley) for reaching out to Tigers Group to discuss a new partnership that would create opportunities for young people in the industry. The team at Briggs Amasco Ltd have been an amazing support for Gareth and we can't wait to hear how he progresses through his apprenticeship.
Huge well done to Gareth!

What can we do to keep skilled bathroom installers excited for a future in the industry?
New research from The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI)’s annual state of the industry survey found that roughly two-thirds (66%) of installers would be tempted to leave the industry if the circumstances were right – a significant increase (6%) over the number in last year’s survey.
As Corporate Sponsors of BiKBBI and a business whose relationship with installers is crucial to Lakes’ success, we wanted to shine a light on how the industry can work together to support them in developing long and successful careers.
Damian Walters - BiKBBI’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “As an industry, we face some of the most significant hurdles ahead, with the skills shortage being most critical.
“With KBB installation apprenticeships in its infancy, the possibility of losing more than half of the existing workforce could have catastrophic implications for all areas of the sector.
“It’s time to accept that the prevention of such a situation and the solution for the skills gap sits firmly with us all.”
Addressing the skills gap in the construction sector!
In a recent conversation with the The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) we discussed the training of apprentices.
The conversation highlighted there are so many myths and preconceptions, that include you can only start in September. Training will take two to three years.
I was like a kid in a candy shop, when I explained the work that a Devon based independent training provider was doing.
They have regular start and end dates.
They offer training in both Bristol and Plymouth.
They also support many different trades and literally no limits on who can train!
Please click the links below and give them a call. Where ever you are based in the UK!
There are loads of options towards addrssing skills and training.
You definitely never stop learning and an apprenticeship is either a start, a refresh, and in my case a chance to prove my knowledge and skills are strong.

📢 **Fair Work Update**
If you employ, or have employed, apprentices, take note...
Territory Tough Pty Ltd, a FORMER Darwin burger outlet operator, was fined $21,645 for not complying with a Compliance Notice.
❗ The penalty followed the underpayment of a young chef's training time during their apprenticeship.
⚡ Fair Work Ombudsman, Anna Booth, emphasized, "Compliance with our notices is not optional—failing to act is a costly mistake."
“Employers should also be aware that taking action to protect young workers and to improve compliance in the fast food, restaurants and cafes sector are priorities for the FWO. Any employees with concerns about their pay or entitlements should contact us for free advice and assistance.”

In our August issue, we share a 5 Minutes With Mandy Mcmullen, the Head of Curriculum and Development at Kleek Apprenticeships, discussing the importance of supporting apprentices in salons ❤️
There are several important ways salons can help their apprentices make the most of their training for future success.
🌍 Creating a nurturing environment:
Apprentices should feel comfortable asking questions, seeking advice and sharing their ideas without fear of judgement. Celebrating their contributions can significantly boost their morale and motivation.
💇♀️ Comprehensive training:
Salons should offer a structured training programme through an accredited apprenticeship training provider that covers both theoretical and practical aspects of hairstyling. Allowing apprentices to assist with real clients under supervision is vital for them to gain practical experience and build confidence.
