It’s no surprise when, as of April 2025, apprentice wages are going up by 18%, making it even harder for small businesses to take on new apprentices. As salon owners, we want to give up-and-coming stylists a chance, but it’s already tough to fund their training with barely any incentive or support. For small salons, the costs of training apprentices can be overwhelming, especially when we’re already working to keep our businesses going. Yet, without apprentices, we lose that chance to nurture the next generation of stylists who bring new ideas, energy, and creativity to the industry. It’s about more than just numbers on a balance sheet—it’s about keeping hairdressing alive and accessible for everyone passionate about it. A flashback came up on my memories the other day and made me laugh… I never thought a career in hairdressing—something I’ve always enjoyed —would be a career I ended up hating to the point where I’ve even been put off going to salons as a client! But sometimes, it’s not the job itself that makes or breaks your passion; it’s the environment you’re placed in. I started my apprenticeship in hairdressing when I was 17, excited to finally start my career in something I’ve been passionate about my whole life, carrying around my ‘hairdressing bag’ full of bobbles and clips to any event and doing anyone’s hair that I could get my hands on😂 However, a few months into that role, I found myself in a super judgemental, unkind work environment. But I put my head down and carried on, doing unfair jobs and being treated like a child, because that’s what apprentices are employed to do… (I realise now, that is completely wrong) It wasn’t until the day of this flashback that I finally stood up for myself and called it quits. Rather than mentorship or constructive feedback, myself and another apprentice were met with harsh management tactics—being made to write “I will complete all end of the day jobs properly” repeatedly, after one of us forgetting to do something very minor in our end of day cleaning. I may be incorrect, but I refused to write a single word handed in my notice later that week. I found the whole situation extremely rude and embarrassing and completely put me off any other apprenticeship as well as a future in hairdressing. I still regularly think about this day, even 8 years on. Is this a disciplinary method you would use as a manager? 😬 Looking back, I realize that this experience taught me an important lesson: the environment we work in can make or break our passion for a career. It’s not enough to love what you do—you need to be in a place that respects, supports, and values you. This was a tough pill to swallow, especially as a 17-year-old starting out in a dream career. It’s taken years to rebuild my confidence, but this experience has shaped my values in ways I couldn’t appreciate at the time. I’ve learned to recognise toxic environments early on, advocate for myself, and, most importantly, never settle for a workplace that doesn’t foster respect and growth. To anyone in a similar position—whether as an apprentice, a new hire, or even a seasoned professional—don’t let a toxic environment dim your passion. The idea of Apprenticeship seems quaint and dated now, but there was a time when it was primary method by which any skill worth having was passed on from man to man. Whether it was butcher, baker or candlestick maker, an aspirant to any trade had to find a willing master under whom he could apprentice. In consideration for the opportunity to learn the trade, an apprentice would provide the master cheap labor around the shop. Put another way, the apprentice’s wages were primarily paid by the master with the opportunity to obtain a vocation. For the third year running, I’ve been a judge in the Victorian State Training Awards. This year, I judged the Apprentice of the Year category. Apprenticeships are such an important aspect of career development in the meat industry, particularly in the retail butchery sectors. During the process of reviewing all 32 applicants for the category, I was able to make two insightful observations potentially driving the take up of apprenticeships, and some of the challenges as to why meat industry apprenticeships may not be as highly regarded as other trades. Observation 1 – A key driver influencing young people to choose their vocation The first question that applicants had to answer was why they chose their course. The majority of respondents explained that they were exposed to a trade through the work that their parents did. Many who enrolled in motor trades, mechanical trades, hairdressing and carpentry for example, stated that they grew up in their dads (or mums) home workshop and started helping their parents on projects. This exposure led them to develop interests in trades. Tinkering on small jobs was a father/son or mother/daughter past time. Over time, this grew into a desire to pursue an apprenticeship. It made me realise just how influential parents are on their child’s education and how early exposure to trades can lead young people down an apprenticeship pathway. Observation 2 - A possible reason why young people are not as attracted to meat industry apprenticeships As mentioned in observation 1, young people became interested in trade careers by being exposed to a profession at home. Some trades are easier to partake in from home such as working on cars in the garage, crafting furniture from a home workshop, or styling hair from any room with a chair and a mirror. Working with meat products, using sharp instruments requires a safe, hygieneic space, where perishable raw materials can’t afford to be discarded due to cost and storage requirements. It’s possible that exposure to butchery at home is less common accordingly. The meat industry needs to create exposure events for young people whilst still in school. Opportunities exist to work with job seekers, and provide them with exposure to meat industry professions as well. MINTRAC has been working with job seekers and exposing them to the retail butchery trade. This has been through investment from the NSW Trade Pathways Fund. MINTRAC’s pre-employment training and exposure program offered job seekers access to foundation skills training in retail butchery. Training delivered by MINTRAC in partnership with TAFE NSW was facilitated at the Wollongong campus. The program also included direct industry exposure through retail butcher store site visits. The combination of foundation skills and site tours provided job seekers with a 360 degree view of the industry and helped them make career based decisions. Our program filled job vacancies and achieved apprenticeship enrollments 👍
