It continuously blows my mind how often amazing resumes from extremely gifted retail managers are completely overlooked when trying to navigate to a different line of work. I’ve heard and seen it again and again and again over 20 years. A piece of paper from a university does not necessarily show you our skill set, but our resume sure will!

Most companies should be looking to retail if they have a product driven sales business. It's sad that retail gets looked at as lesser than, but is a HUGE component of our consumer economy.

This is all soooo very accurate from a 35 year retail veteran in everything mentioned and more. Sad part is... is any of us who chose to pursue a different career without a degree or first hand experience in that new field of study even though retail had given us a general knowledge of the job, we would most likely be passed over or not even considered regardless of the AMAZING multi faceted skill set we have to offer a new line of work!

It should also be mentioned that often times retail managers are given floorplans or planograms that simply don't work for their space and they have to redesign them on the spot. I was once halfway through a store remodel when I discovered that the measurements on the floorplans they gave us were completely wrong, and I had to go back and re-measure the store and re-plan the placing of gondolas and other fixtures. The disheartening thing about this industry is spending years building and using these skills only to be told that you don't have enough experience when applying for a job at corporate in these very areas.

We should add Merchandiser, Inventory Control, Acountant, Marketing, Customer Success, Loss Prevention. I had the opportunity to work in that area and we took my store to be No.3 nationwide among 1200 stores It takes a lot of organization, business accumen, strategy and soft skills to build good rapport with the team and also increase loyal clientele base.
