That is absolute must. This is the first lesson I learnt when I joined Texas Instruments after my graduate school. George Heilmier was the CTO. All leaders were not only technical but also rose thru the ladders internally based on their contributions and leadership. Seen a similar culture at Lockheed Martin. For todays leadership in technology companies .. it is also paramount that they are equipped with systems understanding to be able to design and make decisions that assure safety, prevents fraud/scam.. etc .. since these technologies and platforms are essentially complex systems that has wide ranging implications to humanity.

Having started my career in advertising and marketing, I quickly saw how technology was transforming every industry—including my own. It became clear that to lead effectively in this new landscape, understanding both the business side and the tech side was essential. As we move further into the age of AI, this need becomes even more critical. AI is not just another tool—it’s reshaping business models, customer interactions, and the way we make decisions. Leaders of the future won’t just need to understand technology; they’ll need to integrate it into their strategic vision, making it a core part of their company’s DNA. The New Requirements for Leadership: Tech Fluency: Leaders need to be fluent in technology—not necessarily as coders, but as strategists who can foresee how AI and other innovations will impact their industry. This fluency is essential for making informed decisions and guiding their teams through digital transformation. Adaptability: The pace of change in the AI era is unprecedented. Leaders must be adaptable, willing to learn, and open to new ideas. Embracing continuous learning and being comfortable with uncertainty will be key traits for navigating this landscape.
