The highs and lows of running a baby bank... we met our fundraising target of £20k! Hurrah! But running fundraisers where we ask the general public to give money is always nail biting, and it's awkward asking supporters, friends and family, to donate - again. Despite the high of meeting our target, hearing about a lone mum this evening, who recently had a c-section and is sleeping on the floor (floor boards, with clothing on top to make it a bit softer), is devastating. The time of year, of course makes it more poignant. So, this evening, as well as printing out the referrals to our Christmas campaign which will be made up tomorrow (our last 30 or so families), I'll be reaching out via socials and personal networks for 3 x toddler beds (for other families) plus 1 x double bed and then working with my co-founder Kelly to buy mattresses and source bedding for whatever we manage to get hold of this evening. I'll then be up early tomorrow to get to the warehouse ahead of a new Corporate volunteer team who I'll be training to curate bundles of new Christmas presents for children and families who would otherwise go without. When the corporate / Christmas campaign volunteers go home I'll work with the team to co-ordinate bed collection / delivery over the weekend so everyone has somewhere safe and comfortable to sleep. If you'd like to make a donation, we can only really pick up around Lewisham and Greenwich and even then we really hope people can deliver to us as we don't operate at weekends usually, so don't have volunteers on standby. And of course, having young children ourselves we'll be doing this work around pre-booked Christmas activities. It's okay, we'll sleep in January, hopefully! Photo: Sabri Tuzcu, Unsplash
