Fantastic to be part of an amazing lineup at today's Product Aotearoa conference in Wellington NZ. I got to kick the day off outlining sales techniques that product folks can harness to obtain deeper insights into their customers. The truly amazing Dan Olsen outlined how to prioritize needs and somehow managed to make a video from Spinal Tap completely relevant to his talk! Dan outlined why the innovation sweet spot is when there’s a high need but low satisfaction. Tish Laubscher shared a fascinating case study on doing discovery with prison inmates and the challenges of MVP (loved this quote "There's nothing simple about simplification. It's distilling everything you know into a few lines you can live with" - Anton Chapman). 🇺🇦 Iryna Melnyk & Shipra Mahindra outlined how the key tenants of a strong product culture include: empowerment, customer insights and cross functional connections. But most importantly doing this doesn't just happen by accident - it takes deliberate thinking and action! Vidya Dinamani took us back to fundamentals, exploring a practical framework, based on "Groundwork" which helps PMs to break free from the build trap and product management drudgery. There was a strong call to action to try one or more of Vidya's suggestions and not ask for permission! Joe Raeburn apart from being an amazing singer, highlighted how 2UP Games used Gen A.I. to pivot along with traditional customer discovery to meet new customer needs - balancing the fear of the unknown that Gen A.I. brings whilst harnessing the benefits. Fantastic learnings around balancing CPI vs retention to LTV metrics. Simon Jackson, PhD re-emphasised why product has no guarantees....Everything is a test...So test well. His learnings included: - small changes have big effects (words like "we'll get back to you soon..", create the expectation that you will..soon!) Christina Baldarelli (who incidentally has the best subtitle, "Ministry of Awesome"), shared how she harnessed a growth mindset in the Peace Corps and has experienced first hand how product skills can thrive in unexpected places. A key message was sometimes you need to slow down and do the unscalable things so you can you learn the things that can be scaled - properly. Tana Isaac discussed a topic that most of us have had exposure to if you've been in product a while, but especially in the last 18months - downsizing! He outlined (slightly tongue-in-cheek) how, in this new normal of lean teams, PMs can navigate uncertainty and still drive success and shared learnings from being forced to adapt to these challenges. Big thank you to the NZ product community who so warmly welcomed us and to Anthony Marter, Andrew Tokeley, David Jeames Chelsea E. Hillier and the Product Aotearoa team who organised the event.
