The return of LarioSpace, the international event showcasing Italian innovations and technologies in the New Space Economy, is set to take place on April 23rd and 24th at the Centro Spaziale del Lario, Telespazio‘s satellite telecommunications facility located in Gera Lario near Lake Como. The event is organized by Involve Space, an innovative startup offering launch services with stratospheric balloons. With support from Takeoff Accelerator, Italy’s first accelerator dedicated to the aerospace sector, the event has also garnered support from the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) and the Regione Lombardia. As Space Voyaging we are Media Partner of the event for this edition, continuing a positive collaboration started in 2023 with the first edition. Eu-BEST is a collaborative initiative dedicated to revolutionizing space infrastructure testing, making space more accessible and affordable. Our consortium is a powerhouse of expertise, featuring 7 european partners: Clemessy, SpaceDreamS, OHB Digital Connect GmbH, Pangea Aerospace, Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC , SUAS Aerospace, and Aeroports Públics de Catalunya. Together, we're set to develop and operate a modular and mobile test bench for rocket engines and stages, serving multiple launchers across various locations, promoting #interoperability and #efficiency. With a vision of conducting up to 200 tests per year at competitive prices, our goal is to support Europe’s space ambitions by creating a European network of ground facilities dedicated to launchers, supporting both new and established players in the space industry. Can you imagine how exhilarating it would have been to be an aerospace entrepreneur in the early days of flight, when the skies were the newest frontier to explore? ⛵ Every concept, from short-range flyers to transcontinental jets, seemed within reach. All you needed was a vision and perhaps a bit of daring. The cost of entry into this new world was primarily courage and creativity. 🌍 Aerospace uncharted territory then. It was simple to pioneer in ANY domain. Aspirations were modest, and the hurdles to innovation were surprisingly low. Design faster aircraft! Develop airliners! Explore space! But of course, that was then... Looking back, the aerospace sector now seems dense, heavily regulated, fragile, and saturated with a duopoly that is both in flux and risk-averse, challenging our capacity to innovate further. Yet, if we assess the strides made in aerospace over the past century, the proliferation of affordable travel is nothing short of miraculous. We achieved: transcontinental flights in hours, international space stations housing astronauts, commercial space travel, drones delivering humanitarian goods, and satellites providing global internet access—to name just a few of thousands of advancements. 🛫 But here's the thing. In terms of aerospace, we're barely off the ground. Aerospace is still at the dawn of its exploration. If we could leap into a time machine and journey 100 years into the future, we'd realize that many of the most influential advancements in how humanity moves and connects weren't invented until after our current era. People in the future will marvel at their ability to traverse planets, the establishment of extraterrestrial colonies, and the seamless integration of air and space travel, and say, "Oh, you didn't really have aerospace (or whatever they'll call it) back then." 👽 And they'd be correct. Because from our vantage point now, the most significant advancements in aerospace over the next century are all ahead of us. These groundbreaking inventions await the bold, the ones who see beyond the impossible, eager to seize the equivalent low-hanging fruit of early aviation pioneers. Because future generations will tell you: "Can you imagine how thrilling it would have been to be an aerospace entrepreneur in the early 21st century? The possibilities seemed endless with burgeoning space tourism, privatized space exploration, AI, XR, and industrial internet of things technology. Expectations and barriers were relatively low. It was so easy to be at the forefront. And then they would sigh, 'Oh, if only we realized how attainable everything was back then!'" 🤖 So, the truth: Right now, today, is the best time to innovate in aerospace. There has never been a better time in the whole history of humanity to invent and explore the skies and beyond. Richard Branson to co-pilot first crewed flight for Space Perspective. by Clarence Oxford - Los Angeles CA (SPX) Space Perspective, the world's first stratospheric balloon flight experience company, has announced that Sir Richard Branson will serve as co-pilot on its first crewed flight. Branson, known for his record-breaking Atlantic and Pacific Ocean balloon crossings, will bring his extensive experience to the organization for this milestone mission. In September, Space Perspective successfully conducted an uncrewed test flight that mirrored the trajectory and altitude planned for future commercial flights. Using a hydrogen-powered system, the pressurized capsule will carry eight passengers to an altitude of 20 miles, offering views from above the atmosphere that have never been achieved in a commercial balloon flight. Taber MacCallum, Founder and CTO of Space Perspective, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "We're delighted by Richard's decision to join Jane and I as co-pilot on the first crewed flight, leveraging his deep experience in ballooning to ensure a successful maiden voyage." During his participation at the Paris Air Forum, MaiaSpace CEO Yohann Leroy discussed the mini-launcher market alongside Jörn Spurmann, Chief Commercial Officer at Rocket Factory Augsburg - RFA, Raúl Verdú, Chief Business Development Officer at PLD Space and Toni Tolker-Nielsen, Director of Space Transportation at European Space Agency - ESA. This discussion allowed us to outline the competitive landscape of the mini-launcher market and to highlight the benefits reusability brings in the economics of a mini launcher developed with private money, namely competitive access to a wider market. This wider access leads to higher cadence, hence easier amortization of non-recurring costs, faster recurring costs reduction, more launch opportunities, and better resilience. To be successful, we need also to go fast, foster a more offensive risk culture, accepting failures as opportunities to learn, accelerate, and ultimately reduce costs.
