The Olympics remind me of my grandfather, Chris de Broglio, who was dedicated to fighting racism in sport. His work contributed to the expulsion of South Africa from the games in response to their apartheid regime. 🏅 As any good expert in change will tell you, change is not one big action but a constant, evolving process. If you don't work to maintain those changes, you can see things rolling back downhill. I wonder about the future of the Olympics. How will the Games continue to evolve and inspire? Will they maintain the same level of inclusivity and innovation? Elements of the Paris games suggest not. My grandad loved sport, excellent food, talking to people and he really hated injustice. What are your thoughts on the future of the Olympics? How do you think it will evolve in the coming years? Are you able to separate some of the injustices and enjoy the games? Can you both enjoy the games and advocate for change? https://lnkd.in/ejswADaH #Olympics #Legacy #Inspiration #FutureOfSports

Came across this interesting article by GlobalGiving and I'm stunned to know the impact sports can have on bringing people and communities together. Sports have an incredible power to unite and foster peace. Initiatives like "Tennis Plays for Peace" show how sports can break down barriers, build bridges, and create a sense of belonging and camaraderie among diverse groups. By promoting teamwork, respect, and mutual support, sports can transform lives and contribute to a more harmonious society. Do give this a read. https://lnkd.in/guxwPkEg #SportsForPeace #UnityThroughSports #SportsImpact

In sports, the playing field is supposed to be a space where everyone, regardless of their background, competes on equal ground. It is a space that is not only supposed to promote healthy competition but also champion the values of respect and inclusivity. The recent decision by France to ban the hijab at the Olympics is a glaring contradiction to these values. This policy effectively excludes female athletes who choose to wear the hijab, depriving them of the opportunity to showcase their talents on a global stage. Policies that restrict participation based on personal or religious choices undermine the spirit of unity and fairness that sports are meant to encapsulate. How can we ensure every athlete can compete with dignity and respect? #InclusivityInSports #EqualOpportunity #RespectForAll #Olympics2024 #DiversityMatters #WomenInSports #HijabBan #FairPlay

#disruptparis2024 #boycottparis2024 Today the most controversial and bloodiest of all Olympics since WW2 starts in Paris. We are not dealing with a sporting event anymore. We are dealing with an event masquerading as one while welcoming genocidaires. Despite the International Court of Justice (ICJ) having declared the zionist state in occupied Palestine to be an apartheid state and its settlements to be illegal, the International Olympic Committee – IOC and the FIFA refused to ban it from participating at the Paris Olympics 2024 and other international sporting events. Not only does this contrast starkly with its urgency in banning Russia, it also goes against the Olympic spirit and all ethos. #boycott and #disrupt the Paris Olympics! Meaning and language use | Many Dutchies tend to wish others 'good luck', a common way to wish others well in their future endeavours. Yet, 'Good luck' is NOT a neutral phrase at all and isn't used in the same ways a silimar Dutch phrase would be used. Here's a heated example of how it can be taken in real life by C2 and native speakers of English alike, who share the same cultural values and norms, across the globe. Paula Radcliffe says she doesn't know why she wished convicted child rapist Steven van de Velde "good luck" at the #Olympics in an interview. On the trivialisation of male violence against women and girls #MVAWG https://lnkd.in/ekttfDXn Paula Radcliffe wished van de Velde 'good luck' for the same reason Netherlands’ chef de mission, Pieter van den Hoogenband, said that he had been "surprised by the negative reaction" to a child rapist being sent to the Olympics. #MVAWG is always trivialized by our cultures 'Things are different around the Games...things are exaggerated' said van den Hoogenband, as though concern about a convicted child rapist being selected to represent a country at the Olympics is an exaggerated, over the top reaction. My thoughts today are with all girls who were sexually harmed by adult men, men who then went on to be publicly supported and celebrated. #MVAWG will never lessen until decision makers and those who have the power to shape public thinking make a conscious effort to start taking it seriously.

Integrity in Sports: Balancing Inclusivity and Fairness The Olympics not only celebrate athletic excellence but also set standards for sportsmanship and integrity across the globe. The recent controversy at the Paris Olympics, where Angela Carini withdrew from her match against Imane Khelif citing unfairness, raises critical questions about inclusivity and fairness in sports. Such incidents can have long-term impacts on athletes’ morale. It’s essential to address these issues thoughtfully, ensuring the spirit of fair play while promoting inclusivity. Sports have always been a unifying force, inspiring millions. Common phrases like “don’t be a spoil sport” and “that’s the sportsman spirit” remind us of the values we cherish. This incident should never have occurred, but its resolution must be decisive and clear to affirm that the Olympics is still the pinnacle of global sporting events. #IntegrityInSports #Inclusivity #FairCompetition

Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Joint statement by Eurodiaconia and Fédération de l'Entraide Protestante (FEP) The Olympics are meant to be a celebration of humanity, unity, and respect for all values that we endorse. Hosting the Games provides an opportunity to leave behind a lasting positive social legacy by reflecting on the existing socio-economic inequalities and addressing them with long-term structural solutions. Regrettably, similarly to previous editions, there is a lack of coherence between the political rhetoric and the policies implemented, which conceal rather than support persons in vulnerable situations, perpetuating cycles of marginalization and social exclusion. Football’s global governing body, FIFA, is facing a dilemma after more than 100 women’s players called for an end to their sponsorship deal with Saudi oil company Aramco. A multi-year deal was signed in April that includes the 2026 Men’s World Cup and 2027 Women’s World Cup, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino commending Aramco’s support of world-class events and grassroots initiatives. Just six months on, an open letter has been penned appealing FIFA to reconsider the deal on both environmental and humanitarian grounds. Requests have been made to replace Aramco with more value aligned sponsors, and to establish a sponsor review committee with player representation to evaluate future deals. At a reported value of $100m USD per year, it’s a big deal for FIFA and could be challenging to find a brand to replace this significant commercial contribution. But if they don’t, is there a risk of player boycott? Gemba’s sister company, Turnstile, released a report earlier this year on the power of athletes. This report highlights the sway that athletes increasingly hold over commercial programmes for rightsholders, so all eyes will be on FIFA and how they respond to this challenge.
