Neglecting over-50s in the training world must change - here's how we do it! Our Senior Operating Officer, Sara Roberts CIHM spoke to FE Week about the critical need to recruit and retain older learners. With 15 years until state pension age, why do so many over-50s feel their learning days are over? Employers, training providers, and society must shift the perception that learning is only for the young. Older workers bring invaluable experience and knowledge, crucial for futureproofing industries. Tailored, inclusive, and flexible training programmes are key to keeping their careers vibrant and fulfilling. Read more via the link below.

A positive learning environment ❔Q: Why do most learners drop out of courses? 🙋A: Lack of a positive learning environment. 👉This may be for a number of reasons. Our research shows that many learners drop out of training courses because of: - Workplace barriers such as not enough flexibility - Emotions, it’s too stressful or too hard to juggle other commitments - Personal reasons such as life events or mental health - Social and cultural differences - Lack of diversity and representation How can you help learners finish their course? Acknowledge, support and prepare. 💙If you acknowledge any learning barriers and additional support needed from the outset you’ll more likely create a positive learning environment for your apprentices to complete their training. Well-being plays an essential role in the success of a learner's training. We work with companies to plan out personalised support and explore welfare issues such as flexibility, fair wages, budgeting, activities and more. 🎓 Five benefits of lifelong learning 🎓 Did you know that learning new skills can boost your confidence? Or that #upskilling can help you make new professional connections? Here at Children in Scotland, we are passionate about continuous #learning, not only for career development but for the many wellbeing benefits it can provide, too. Here’s our top five reasons to engage your brain and learn something new: 1️⃣ Motivation. After doing the same role for a while, it’s easy and quite common to start feeling a lack of motivation and drive, especially if you’re not challenged by your current responsibilities. Starting a new course or qualification can bring back some of your ‘get up and go’ and help with focus and productivity as you learn new skills. 2️⃣ Confidence. Expanding your skills through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) can lead to a massive boost in self-esteem as you gain positive feedback and grow more confident in your abilities. And who doesn’t love that feeling of accomplishment that comes with completing a new project? 3️⃣ Better working relationships. Workplace training courses aren’t just about achieving individual goals – by working through new learning programmes as a team, you’ll make connections with colleagues and foster better communication, creating a trusting and collaborative environment. 4️⃣ Improved memory and concentration. Did you know that learning a new skill is like a workout for the mind? From completing crossword puzzles to revising coursework, challenging your brain to learn something new can create new neural connections, improve executive functions and even help us remember new information. 5️⃣ New opportunities. Expanding your existing skills and knowledge, and maintaining professional qualifications, can give you a competitive edge when it comes to applying for new jobs – and also show employers that you’re interested in progression. If you’ve been inspired to learn something new, did you know that we offer a range FREE courses? Check out our eLearning Hub, where you'll find a range of online programmes relevant to the children’s sector, including a new module on Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC), and a course on understanding visual impairment in preschool children. 👉 To start your learning journey, visit https://lnkd.in/ddjm3ZHJ

Skills Development Providers, Facilitators, Assessors, Moderators, Employers, Students and concerned citizens – help us to remain in business. We also have mouths to feed. South Africa is on the brink of a Skills Development crisis unless decisive action is taken by our leaders soon. An open letter directed to Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande, publicly released on May 3rd, 2024, represents the voices of over 5,000 concerned individuals and continues to gather support. This letter emphasizes the critical need for urgent intervention. In addition to the open letter, a petition has been initiated, gathering input and signatures from training providers, facilitators, assessors, moderators, learners, and affected companies. If you share our concerns, we invite you to add your voice by completing the petition linked below. It is imperative to take a moment to review the statistics and messages outlined in the open letter. The current trajectory risks exacerbating unemployment in our country. Maintaining the June 30th deadline for the conclusion of numerous qualifications and Unit Standards will result in dire consequences. Training companies may be forced to cease operations, companies may refrain from investing in skills development, and many unemployed individuals will miss out on opportunities for learnerships and skill enhancement, further hindering their employability. We urge for a responsible transition process, advocating for the removal of qualifications only after suitable replacements have been established. Here are some key contextual points to consider: 1. Thousands of qualifications and Unit Standards are set to expire by June 30th, 2024, barring new enrolments. 2. Despite the mandate of the QCTO over the past 14 years to replace these qualifications with occupationally focused ones, fewer than 1,000 qualifications and part qualifications have been registered. Many of them has also expired and not been replaced or re-registered as yet. 3. Developing replacement qualifications can take between one to three years – which needs a Task Team, industry experts, subject matter experts – giving voluntary time without remuneration. 4. After replacement, it may take up to 18 months for training providers to develop their learning material against the new curriculum to obtain accreditation with the QCTO. 5. Many replaced qualifications lack Assessment Centres, hindering learners from obtaining competence certificates. Some Assessment Centres are too far, and a logistical nightmare for learners that cannot get transport. 6. Rural skills development faces significant challenges due to procedural barriers and the absence of rural assessment centres and Providers find it difficult to upskill in other areas (such as rural areas), as they need to ask permission to conduct training now (30days in advance to obtain permission). please sign pertition. https://lnkd.in/edQpPcKJ

As a means to effectively address Canada’s growing need for upskilling, we support the development of an all encompassing and robust skills ecosystem, one that is built on ongoing collaboration among all learning providers, learners, and employers. The success of this skills ecosystem relies on four key pillars. In the latest and final instalment of our Imperative of Up series, we explore these four pillars, and lay out an upskilling action plan for Canada. https://lnkd.in/gZHV-4ZU #canadianeconomy #upskilling #workforcedevelopment #skillstraining

A great piece by our colleagues from SOLAS (An tSeirbhís Oideachais Leanúnaigh agus Scileanna)'s Enterprise, Employees & Skills team on 'How to future-proof your workforce with upskilling programmes', included in the Future of Education supplement Irish Independent this week. On the benefits of Skills to Advance for employees & employers Noreen Fitzpatrick says: “Level 5 courses are completely subsidised, allowing employees to access them at no cost. For those looking to advance to level 6 qualifications, employers only need to pay a small fee, making it an affordable option for businesses seeking to invest in the development of their workforce.” eCollege is a flexible online learning platform and Ciara Ni Fhloinn says: “It’s free, and these courses are designed to be completed part-time. If you are employed, it can easily work around your working schedule. This is good news for employers, too.” Read the full article here ➡ https://lnkd.in/dVVyU7zm

First, education management is a critical part of every thriving organization. Learning organizations usually give preference to how much knowledge is in the organization. So, what tends to happen is that an education management program is deployed across the organization to allow for everyone in the organization to select a repertoire of knowledge enhancement courses. The courses are usually selected for each individual according to their departments or unit, through a gap analysis. Courses or learning programs are designed based on the result of the gap analysis and each employee goes through with the identified courses from the gap analysis, and periodic evaluation of each employees learning path are plotted to determine progress and growth in learning of each employer.
