🎙️Green IO E48 with Gaël DUEZ focuses on the gaming industry’s environmental footprint. Haven’t got time to listen to the whole podcast? 👀Then read on for the latest insights from Maria Wagner, Sustainable Games Alliance Managing Director, and Dr. Ben Abraham, SGA Research and Standard Lead. 🎮 Gaming industry specifics The gaming industry is unique within the tech sector as it has a strong, direct connection with users, plus a global-wide reach. The value chain is complex, and there is a creative angle too, as the software industry combines with the digital arts industry. 🌱 Green IT Sound metrics are not yet available but it is estimated that 20-50 million tons of Carbon emissions p.a. are accumulated through playing games. As Ben says, “…the idea that the games industry globally has a footprint probably the size of a country like Sweden” is not common knowledge. The gaming ecosystem extends across the development, production and distribution processes. There is also the role of end users with their individual behavior and personal devices. This complex ecosystem gives rise to difficulties in calculating C emissions and other environmental impacts. 📈 Calculating emissions There are two main problems. First, the numbers don’t add up (if there are any numbers to add up in the first place) and proper disclosure is not commonplace. The second is that there is not a real actionable gaming industry strategy on how to achieve net zero. These combine with the complexity of the value chain, the lack of joined-up thinking and current reporting mechanisms such as ESRS not being adapted for the industry. ✅ Positive actions at industry level Both Ben and Maria have ideas on greening the industry: - Support new games & upgrades on older hardware - Opt for renewable electricity - Collaborate & share best practice - Be story-aware - Explore & connect with gaming ecosystem - Lose the ‘pixel perfect’ attitude - Join the SGA! 💚 Positive actions at gamer level Personal actions include: - Opting for renewable electricity contracts - Questioning ourselves - as a gamer, do we really need the latest hardware? - Use our voice: Open up the discussion and demand transparency Yet the prevailing context is one where the industry constantly strives to develop, progress, aiming for better gaming performance, which locks users into a constant hardware upgrade cycle. ⚒️ Tools under development Luckily the SGA is on a mission to produce a methodological standard for measuring and collecting data, and calculating emissions produced across the entire ecosystem. The idea is that it will be an open-source plug and play tool to help the games industry comply with CSRD, and create a positive gaming experience for designers, producers, distributors and gamers alike. To the Sustainable conscious SF Bay Area Residents Specifically I am running a pilot for our mobile solution (EcoEpic). The goal of the pilot is to use your feedback to help our prototype reach the intended solution based on the problem statement we hope to solve. *Instructions* 1. Download the Prototype using the QR code attached? 2. Based on the problem statement reiterated below, give constructive feedback to help the app reach the ideal solution. (Kindly send your feedback, insights and comments directly to [email protected]) *Problem Statement* The Problem Statement I am seeking to solve is stated below: “Users, including consumers and professionals from various fields, who prioritize sustainability, face challenges in verifying the sustainability claims of products. These challenges stem from confusing and conflicting information, lack of transparency from brands, misleading or inaccurate claims, and inadequacies in existing solutions like sustainability apps. Despite their willingness to invest time in research and use sustainability apps, these users express a need for a user-friendly, reliable solution that provides comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate information about the sustainability claims of products. This solution should increase transparency from brands, offer more certifications or labels for verification, and hold brands accountable to prevent misleading or inaccurate information. It should encourage sustainable shopping habits and help users feel more confident in their purchasing decisions by making it easier to verify sustainability claims, thereby overcoming the current limitations and confusion in the market. Such a solution would enhance their confidence in making informed purchasing decisions and improve their sustainable shopping habits. Daniel M. Adalida Baca Irene M. Upgradability, modularity, repairability, disassembly... If you work in sustainability you probably get a little tingle when you see words like this. But for many, these things can feel like concepts that complicate life, or that are misunderstood as new avenues for profit making by greedy organisations. This is certainly the reaction I have seen online recently. Logitech have even had to make a public statement about a one purchase per lifetime sustainable mouse that their new CEO briefly mentioned because of backlash. I've also seen this countless times when companies make responsible decisions to reduce packaging of their products only to get similar reactions, including an angry mob on Reddit recently getting very upset by Poptarts removing packaging from their products. Yep, effing Poptarts. There are some important lessons here for designers, sustainability folk, policy makers and academics alike. We need to stay grounded and remember that just because we think Libraries of Things get many of us excited, they're gonna be an incredibly hard sell to most people. Most people have no idea about the changes we need to deliver a sustainable and flourishing society. They haven't been communicated with effectively about it and they definitely haven't been consulted about it. This is the perfect cocktail for resistance to change. A lot of people are too far locked into the current externalising economic system that produces cheap stuff on mass and at low cost to afford the sustainable products we need. Changes like this always need to be accompanied by clear communications on why they are happening because even if they are designed to best practice with lots of stakeholder engagement and co-creation, you can never engage with everyone. Society as a whole needs more education on climate challenges, but also an awareness of the scale of change needed. We're getting better at the former but are incredibly behind on the latter. It may not fit with science based targets but it is unfair to judge too harshly businesses who are slow at adopting the types.of products and business models that we need. Developing them is complex and requires a whole new skill set where methodologies are still not popularised. Delivering them to end-users is risky because there is very little demand for them. The rationale for change is not clearly communicated, nor are the benefits. Nor is their adequate support. I don't really have a call to action or anything on this. It's a stream of consciousness whilst I eat my cereal. I guess my point is communication and what I call extreme empathy are still the two things I think the climate movement could do better at more than anything else. An actual sense of community and popularised movement would be nice. If one of you can figure that out that'd be ace. Ta.

If there is one key takeaway from this article, it's Makersite. This app is a game-changer for tracking sustainability efforts. It's an excellent tool for companies that don't have a process in place or, in some scenarios, pay third parties to compile data that could be easily managed internally. #autodeskemployee #digitaltransformation #sustainability
