NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to recognise and be proud of the oldest continuous living culture on earth.   It’s an important opportunity to celebrate the culture, history and achievements of First Nations people while recognising the ongoing impact that colonisation still has to this day.   It's also a time for non-Indigenous Australians to open ourselves up to listen, learn, reflect on our privilege and think about what we can all do to continue to work towards true reconciliation.   Sovereignty was never ceded. Australia is and always will be Aboriginal land.   We would like to acknowledge that we are a non-Indigenous organisation and we cannot speak for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. During National NAIDOC Week, people all across Australia are celebrating the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme for this year's NAIDOC Week is "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud" which celebrates the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. It's important to recognise the resilience, strength, and contributions of Indigenous people to our society. The fire symbolises the connection to Country, each other and traditions. Honouring this flame ignites pride and unity, reaffirming our commitment to acknowledge, preserve, and share the cultural heritage that enriches our nation. For SW Accountants & Advisors, NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to reflect further on our own journey towards reconciliation and to consider ways in which we can better support and engage with Indigenous communities. Some of the areas we are committed to include increasing supplier diversity, and promoting cultural awareness and understanding for a safe workplace. 🌟 Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2024: "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud" 🌟 Earlier this month, we proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week, recognising the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to engage with First Nations cultures and histories, and we embraced this chance to learn and celebrate together. In honour of this significant week, we held daily events and activities which included the following Lunch-and-Learn Series and Updates: 👉 Day 1: We hosted a powerful discussion titled "Journey to Employment: Experiences and Insights from First Nations Workers." David Meyers, Director, IT&R, shared insights about NAIDOC Week and we heard inspiring stories from a First Nations employee, highlighting their resilience and success in the workforce. 👉 Day 2: We shared an update on our Reconciliation Action Plan deliverables, highlighting our progress and next steps. NAIDOC Week is not just one week of celebration; it's a time for reflection, learning, and commitment to fostering inclusivity and respect for Indigenous cultures. 🪶 As NAIDOC Week wraps up, it's been heartwarming to see so many big companies showing support with smoking ceremonies, dances, and cupcakes. However, real change begins at the core of business culture. Beyond the NAIDOC Week festivities, how many of these companies are truly committed to "Closing the Gap"? It's essential to ask: - How many have initiatives supporting the First Nations communities directly or entrepreneurs to build businesses to support the community? - How many provide work experience placements and career pathways for First Nations people? How many invest in truth-telling and cultural competency/engagement training? NAIDOC Week should indeed be celebrated, but it's also a prime opportunity to push harder for equity and inclusion. There's a long way to go, and it's time for businesses to walk the talk.
