One of the toughest challenges for middle managers are the expectations that come in from all directions. Up, down, side and of course outside. That’s even before someone decides it would be a great idea to ‘transform’ or adopt new values and behaviours. When that happens, it is often middle managers who are left exposed and, while unintentional, set up for failure. ❓ Why? Because when organisations deem change is necessary the ‘change’ is a magnificent, illuminating candle in a nice shiny box. This candle is then taken out of the box and handed to middle management to run out into a turbulent storm (ingrained collective beliefs, habits, traditions, biases, norms, etc.) to make everything bright and dreamy. ⚖ The odds aren’t often in their favour. And those up and down can be oblivious to this reality. So if that’s you, how can you navigate such circumstances while maintaining sanity and - still making a difference. 👈👉 Embrace the sides and take small steps. Your fellow managers and their teams are micro organisations like you and your team. It is within the connections and engagements between each other where the new values and behaviours can be tested, understood and grown for the benefit of these micro organisations. ❌ It is inexcusable when the sponsorship and leadership behind change is absent - and yes there is always the option to let the change fail when others are talking the talk but not walking the walk. But if the impacts of the change will benefit the working environment for you and your team, then success can be found with the collective might of multiple teams. Even if the wider organisation is chained to the past, focus on the step changes you can make together, test and adjust. 🎆You might just find yourselves setting the standard that ultimately breaks old chains.
