Best friends at the IBA Mexico 🇲🇽 - choose them strategically 😉 Why your "Best Friends" network should support— not define— your firm's international strategy The International Bar Association Law Firm Management Committee Retreat was a great success - thanks to Stephen Revell and the rest of the organisation team- lots of friends gathered and made. I joined a brilliant panel on Law Firm Networks moderated by Paul Marmor and including Nadège Nguyen Keith Heddle and Alan Keep A takeaway for me on this topic is the fact that, too often, independent law firms rely on a "best friends" network as their international strategy. While these networks can be valuable, they should be selected *after* your firm has designed a clear client and international strategy, not as a substitute for it. A well-defined client and markets strategy allows you to differentiate between following your clients internationally or focusing on inbound referrals. Each approach requires a different network design. If your goal is to follow clients, you need partners that can integrate seamlessly across borders. If inbound referrals are your focus, your partners should be deeply connected to the firms, industries and markets that drive business to you. In each case you must chose how and with who you befriend. But there's more to a "best friends" network than referrals alone. Here are 5 additional ways your network can help drive success: 📝 Knowledge Sharing- Tap into expertise in local laws, market conditions, and best practices. 🌍 Giving international perspective to your partners - particularly the younger generation. 👁 Brand Enhancement- A strong, well-curated network raises your profile globally and adds credibility. 👩🎓 Secondments and Joint Training Initiatives- Share resources on professional development, from legal trends to client care.and provide secondment or exchange opportunities to deepen knowledge relationships and experience 📈 Market Intelligence - Access insights about international markets and trends that can sharpen your own competitive edge. Remember, a successful "best friends" network is about more than just sharing work. It’s about long-term collaboration that aligns with your firm's strategic vision. #LawFirmStrategy #IBAMexico #lawfirmmanagement##Internationalstrategy #ClientFocus #LegalNetworks #BestFriendsApproach Julian Yarr Julian Yarr Advisory [email protected]

"Why on earth are you back in corporate?" From the time I announced that I had decided to join a corporate law firm after being my own boss for 16 years, I've been getting this question a lot. The short answer is that once I started on a journey of change, I quickly realised that I needed to be open to the unexpected. So, when an English colleague who is part of my network (The power of networking is a story for another post) contacted me regarding a new opportunity, I decided to just be curious. After meeting the commercial team at Wright Hassall LLP, I knew that all my years of legal practice, business management, team mentoring and building client relationships could come together in a new and exciting way. The values and vision of this firm resonate with me as does the excellence and practical nature of the legal advice provided by its lawyers. Did I expect to end 2024 in a corporate law firm and all that this entails? No, definitely not. Do I believe that this is where I am meant to be? Yes, absolutely. To all my clients, colleagues, coaches and cheerleaders, I wouldn't be on this new adventure if it wasn't for your support over the years and for this, I am deeply thankful. So here's to making a difference to businesses who are located or operate in the UK. Here's to forging opportunities between businesses in South Africa and those in the UK, and here's to being part of a team of commercial lawyers who are committed to walking alongside their clients. #wrighthassall #newadventure #commerciallaw #southafricansintheUK

𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 In my line of work, I often guide clients through the nuances of doing business internationally, highlighting the critical legal differences they need to navigate. However, a recent personal experience shifted my perspective, turning me from a guide into a curious observer. After visiting the U.S. Supreme Court, I found myself deeply intrigued by the broad public interest for the court, people lining up on court days throughout the night to hopefully be amongst the lucky few to attend the hearing. This curiosity came at a time when I was wrapping up an article for the Dutch Financial Times (#FD) on the legal challenges of international remote work. The contrast between the court's public engagement in the U.S. and what I'm accustomed in the Netherlands sparked a series of reflections on the diverse ways societies interact with their legal systems. The article I wrote aimed to warn of the potential legal pitfalls of having employees work from different countries, such as the unexpected permanent establishment of a company's legal presence abroad. Yet, standing in the U.S. Supreme Court, I was reminded of the vast cultural differences that underlie these legal frameworks. It was a moment of realisation that legal advice cannot be seen apart from the cultural context in which it applies. Understanding the laws of a country is just one piece of the puzzle; grasping the cultural and legal expectations of both parties involved is equally crucial. This blend of legal knowledge and cultural curiosity is essential for successfully navigating the complexities of international business. It’s not just about warning against potential legal issues but also about embracing the diversity of global legal practices and perspectives. As we engage in international agreements and ventures, the importance of curiosity cannot be overstated. It drives us to explore and understand the myriad ways in which legal norms and cultural nuances intersect, ensuring that we approach each business challenge with a comprehensive and empathetic perspective. International work is exciting and enriching, presenting an opportunity for constant learning and adaptation. As legal professional, embracing these differences not only enhances the ability to serve our clients but also enriches my personal and professional growth. It's a journey of continuous curiosity, discovery, and understanding—crucial for navigating the complexities of international transactions and agreements - and exciting at the same time! #InternationalLaw #culturaldifferences #globasbusiness

💡Reflections of a Lawyer Journey (1/10) 1️⃣ The world is big, so as a lawyer, you should try to make it small Where it started… The moment I realized, starting my (tax) career at Andersen, that the company symbol was once iconic doors (see picture), I understood that Tax Law does not stop at borders. From day one, there was a need to think beyond your jurisdiction. Be local but, at the same time, have an international mindset. It is essential to forge a link to the global legal community—whether through colleagues, clients, conferences, or studying abroad. Realizing this early in your career makes the journey easier. Finding that global mindset requires action. You need to demonstrate approachability and readiness for international work by embracing diverse perspectives and being open to collaboration. I still remember the awe of my team during client conference calls when I inserted translated Portuguese idioms/proverbs as a connecting point. “Who doesn’t have a dog, hunts with a cat.” Small gestures like these help connect and make the world feel smaller. Law is also only part of the equation. To truly excel, it is vital to broaden your knowledge in areas like economics, business strategy, and human behavior. Languages and cultural awareness are excellent tools for building deeper relationships across jurisdictions—and for making the world smaller. An international mindset isn’t just about crossing borders; it’s about building bridges and creating meaningful impacts for those we serve. “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln #CareerReflections #ProfessionalGrowth #korepartners
