Mercedes-Benz has updated its electric vehicle (EV) strategy, initially set three years ago, with new targets for the upcoming decade. The company now projects that electrified vehicles, including hybrids, will constitute 50% of its sales by 2030, revising the earlier forecast of achieving this milestone by 2025. Despite this adjustment, Mercedes-Benz remains committed to advancing electrification in its product lineup, emphasizing adaptation to market conditions. Furthermore, investor presentations indicate that the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles is not expected to match that of internal combustion engine models within this decade. #MercedesBenz #EVStrategy #Electrification #AutomotiveIndustry

Safety of next level and continuous improvement in safety with each passing day.
We’ve just started building our new, fully electric #VolvoEX90 SUV at our factory outside of Charleston, South Carolina – so it’s safe to say we’re in a celebratory mood this week! Our new flagship SUV is based on our next generation, born-electric EV technology base and represents a paradigm shift for our company. Not only does the EX90 expand our portfolio of fully electric cars, but it’s also the first Volvo car powered by core computing technology – a technology that enables a new era of safety for our cars. It’s designed to be the safest Volvo car to date, with cutting-edge passive and active safety technology and software informed by a broad suite of sensors. We produce the EX90 at our plant in Charleston, South Carolina. In recent years, we have made extensive investments in the facility to renew and expand, and it also has a state-of-the-art battery pack production line. So, our US plant is well-prepared to take on this mission. It reflects our long-term commitment to South Carolina, and the United States, where Volvo Cars has operated for almost 70 years through a robust network of 281 dealerships across 47 states. The first customer deliveries of the EX90 are scheduled for the second half of this year.

#VW's strategic move to allocate €60 billion towards maintaining the competitiveness of combustion cars may raise questions about the company's stance on electric vehicles. While aiming for an 80% electric fleet by the end of the decade, I assess that the decision seems prudent to manage the transition from industrial combustion engines to battery electric vehicles. This shift signifies VW's commitment to defending its core for a specified period while embracing the new era of electric mobility. Transitioning from ICE to BEV is a complex process that involves technological advancements, changes in infrastructure, battery technologies, and customer acceptance. How VW utilizes the €60 billion investment in ICE will be crucial to understanding the company's vision for the future. Will these investments lead to traditional factory setups or pave the way for innovative, digitally-driven end-to-end supply chains? While VW's decision to reallocate a significant portion of its investments to ICE may raise eyebrows, it should focus on the lessons and advancements that will drive the company's leadership in the BEV segment. As VW navigates this transformation, observers will be keen to see how the company leverages its resources to stay competitive in both the combustion and electric vehicle markets. It is not BEV or ICE but both for the foreseeable future. It is not today or tomorrow but managing across time horizons. This is the crux of digital business transformation facing industrial companies, highlighted in our book #Fusionstrategy. #automotiveindustry #electricvehicles #strategy #innovation #Fusionstrategy

Many car manufacturers have shifted their focus back to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles due to stagnant or declining electric vehicle (EV) sales and increased competition from Chinese companies. Companies such as GM, VW, Stellantis, and Mercedes-Benz have increased their investments in ICE technology while slowing down EV production. This shift comes at a critical time as the entire European automotive industry and its industrial ecosystem faced the risk of being undermined, compelling companies to pursue unviable or undefendable competitive advantages.
