Successful startups usually reach a point where infrastructure, human resources and systems cannot keep up with the growth of the business. Without the right pieces on the board, growth companies encounter execution issues, raising both commercial and other risks. Executing hiring plans, etc. must be prioritized. In a recent Acquired podcast, Howard Schultz commented about Starbuck’s early growth: “We were so in the mud, … we didn’t have time to look up… we were just running so fast, so hard. When you’re growing at this pace, it’s almost virtually impossible to catch the growth in terms of the infrastructure.” -Gilbert, B. & Rosenthal, D., Acquired (Starbucks Episode with Guess Host, Howard Schultz) (June 4, 2024). What types of growth-related challenges has your company faced and overcome? Would love to hear about it. In upcoming editions of The Savvy Startup Advisor, we will be exploring ways in which startups can overcome their growth challenges. If you have any comments or stories that you’d like to share with our audience, please reach out to us at thesavvystartup@gmail.com.

What does it really take to build a successful company that stands the test of time? I love talking to experienced entrepreneurs who have seen companies through all stages of growth. I met Mark S. McNally when I invested in Nobody Studios, which is on a mission to launch 100 startups in 5 years. 100 startups? That seems crazy, but talking to Mark, I knew he’d be the one to pull this off. Mark has experience leading multiple companies from infancy through successful IPOs and bringing visionary products to market across various industries. When we chatted on the podcast, he told me about his 3 fundamental pillars that can make an entrepreneurial journey a success: 1️⃣ Obsess Over Real Problems Success starts by identifying genuine unmet needs and building solutions that directly solve tangible problems people face. While it sounds basic, Mark emphasized that without this customer-centric foundation, you simply won't create an enduring, successful business. 2️⃣ Cultivate a Fearless Founder Culture At Nobody Studios, Mark intentionally nurtures an environment where founders feel empowered to boldly experiment, learn from failures, pivot swiftly, and even let go of ideas when needed - free from stigma. Undying passion and deep domain mastery are non-negotiables. 3️⃣ Crystallize Your Strategic Intent As companies scale, maintaining laser-focus alignment on the strategic vision becomes make-or-break. Mark shared learnings from Airbnb's Brian Chesky on over-communicating intent, reorganizing structures seamlessly, and fostering an almost "militaristic" coherence across teams. Whether just starting out or an established founder, you’re going to love this conversation on how to build innovative, high-growth companies positioned for long-term success. What has been your biggest lesson in scaling an empowering culture or maintaining strategic focus? Share your insights below! Listen to the full episode on the Product Thinking Podcast today. I had a great conversation with Jaymin Bhuptani of Uplers about hiring for startups, and how it's a much different challenge than hiring for Fortune 500 companies. Check it out here.
"For SaaS startups, building the right team isn’t just about filling roles—it’s about creating impact. A bad hire on a small team can ripple across the company, something no startup can afford." says Edward Morgan, Founder and CTO at Gordian Knot. Our amazing host and CEO, Jaymin Bhuptani, describes more about how Uplers supports global SaaS startups in building engineering teams. As Jaymin puts it: "At Uplers, we help founders and engineering managers of SaaS startups build their engineering team." 🔍 Dive into hiring challenges, leveraging AI tools, and scaling engineering teams for SaaS success in our upcoming podcast episode. Tune in to the full episode on 18th December for some valuable insights! #PodcastAlert #SaaSStartups #HiringInsights #EngineeringTeams #StartupSuccess #TechHiring #TalentAcquisition #TeamBuilding #AIHiring #Leadership #Entrepreneurship #SaaSTech #FutureOfWork

After I got a super-experienced Executive from a multi-national to Head our operations: He engaged a website company to rebuild the website. He engaged another company to redesign logo. He made the whole company use Notion. He gave everyone a 25% raise. He arranged trainings for the team to use mental models. He encouraged all employees to listen to motivational podcasts. He hired an experienced HR. He added carroms and TT in our dining room And guess what? We made quite some expenses on this but didn't make any revenues. If you are a startup and hiring experienced people, hire people who are 1. Hands-on 2. Talks only results #runningstartups #techstartups #startups #founders #entrepreneurs

Are You Running Your Startup in Steve Jobs’ Turtleneck 👕or Tim Cook’s Polo 👔? Startups often face a choice: Dive deep like Steve Jobs, making every decision, or lead from above like Tim Cook, empowering your team to execute. But the real question is: Do you know when to switch between the two? Are you deep in the trenches, making every call yourself, or are you leading from the top, empowering your team to execute? Discover how to switch between Founder Mode and Manager Mode to drive growth. Here’s how to find the right balance: 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲: All about intense focus, direct involvement, and rapid decision-making. Best for: ● Early Stages: When the startup is taking off and needs a clear vision and rapid execution. ● Growth Phases: To keep a tight grip on the vision and make quick, impactful decisions. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲: Focuses on delegation, team empowerment, and structured management. Ideal for: ● Maturity Stages: When the company needs to scale operations and delegate more. ● Stable Phases: To distribute workload, promote teamwork, and sustain growth. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 ⚖️: ✅ Go Hybrid: Keep a close eye on the big picture like Steve Jobs, but don’t be afraid to delegate the day-to-day like Tim Cook. ✅ Stay Connected: Regular check-ins help keep your team aligned and make transitions between leadership styles seamless. ✅ Build Trust: Show your team they can count on you. Credibility makes switching gears easier. ✅ Be Clear: Keep communication straightforward. Let your team know what’s changing and why. ✅ Avoid Burnout: Keep an eye on your well-being. Don’t let intense focus become a liability. Getting the balance right is crucial. Think about where your startup is and adjust your approach to fit. That’s how you scale sustainably. At The Startup Podcast, we’re unpacking how to balance these leadership modes for the greatest impact. Most founders think scaling fast leads to success. It’s actually the fastest way to fail without product-market fit. Pablo Srugo, host of The Product Market Fit Show, joined The Startup Podcast to share the 5 steps to master product-market fit. Here are 4 steps he discussed with Chris Saad: 1. Master Research Mode Forget building too soon. Instead: -Immerse yourself in your customer’s world. -Uncover subtle but critical problems. -Solve issues manually before scaling. 🛠 Example: Ada’s CEO Mike Murchison worked as a support agent for a year. Result? $50M ARR. 2. Do Things That Don’t Scale Obsess over early users. Instead: -Personally connect with new users. -Solve problems directly, no shortcuts. -Set a high bar for scalability. 🏆 Example: Wealthsimple’s founder called users personally, helping grow a $5B company. 3. Forget Growth, Focus on Value Growth follows value creation. -Solve problems, not just drive usage. -Prioritize engaged users over fast scaling. -Add friction to attract serious customers. 🚀 Example: Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology’s Founder Jack Newton required onboarding, ensuring beta users cared deeply. 4. Pivot Harder, Faster Move boldly when things aren’t working. -Pivot product, market, or team when needed. -Ignore sunk costs and focus on real solutions. 🔄 Example: Noibu pivoted to fixing checkout bugs, skyrocketing to $300K MRR. What’s Step 5? It’s the game-changer for uncovering what makes your product stick. 🎯 Type 5 in the comments, and we’ll send you the link to the episode! Pablo’s interviewed 100+ founders on The Product Market Fit Show. Don’t miss his insights. #startups #entrepreneur #productmarketfit #founders #growth #earlystage
