Necessity is the mother of invention and crises force governments to change ➡ To improve crisis preparedness capacities, #Sweden is actively anticipating and rehearsing potential futures through an exercise known as the “Forward-Looking Cell” 🤔 What’s it all about? The Forward-Looking Cell exercise generates anticipatory knowledge for decision-making by asking “What else could happen” and “What could we currently do differently, if the situation unfolds in an unexpected way”. It interrogates the resilience of the current governance and crisis preparedness structure by analysing the system’s functioning, integrating emergent knowledge, uncovering potential communication strategies to decision-makers, and providing pathways for co-ordination among stakeholders. 🆕 blog by Angela Hanson. I've been thinking a lot lately about the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world we live in, and how it is become increasingly complex with so many intertwined issues, crisis, conflicts and natural disasters. Then on the weekend I came across a two year article from Thomas Homer-Dixon and Johan Rockstrom and their use of the term "polycrisis". Very interesting reading, and even more applicable today than when it was first published. For those of you in the private sector, are you building this in to your ERM framework and if so, how are you identifying, measuring and attempting to mitigate these new risks?

The World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024 launched a national resilience Report titled ‘Transforming National Resilience Systems for Future Generations’ in collaboration with Arthur D. Little (ADL), a global management consulting firm, with the aim of supporting leaders of government entities in enhancing national resilience and avoiding potential socio-economic risk of up to $30 trillion from natural disasters or national crises over the next two decades. https://lnkd.in/dzzn2by8

Last week, ICSI's Risk & Resilience Director George M. Karagiannis, PhD, CEM® discussed people's selection of and trust toward warning information sources at the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Annual Workshop. ⚡Key takeaway: The preferred and most trusted warning information sources vary across countries, whereas warning recipients attempt to confirm warnings by seeking information from multiple sources and communications pathways. The presentation, co-authored by Gianluca Pescaroli and Sarah Dryhurst, drew from the findings of our project 'From perceptions to saving lives', funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation and implemented with UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR). Congratulations to Rod Cartwright Independent crisis communications consultant, who has just released the 2024 Edition of ‘Reputation, Risk and Resilience’ – a summary and analysis of eight major global reports on those interlocking topics from the previous 12 months. The report highlights an ever-lengthening list of interconnected top-tier risks, underpinning today’s polycrisis. Those risks range from geopolitical tensions, misinformation, polarisation and cybersecurity to the climate emergency, economic decline and the long-tail human impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, its suggestions on crucial practical questions to address also provide an important reminder that with the right mindset, preparation and action, there is real opportunity lurking beneath the permacrisis. We've seen convergence in thinking towards the importance of proactive measures, including risk anticipation, early warning, and preparedness initiatives. And the latest example is the UNDP’s (UN Development Program) practice note, Getting Ahead of the Crisis Curve: Approach to Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Preparedness. The document foregrounds the shift from reactive crisis response to proactive preventative action as a key strategy for building resilience. Although the practice note is addressed to global development policy-makers, it also offers more on-the-ground recommendations for those involved directly in early warning and preparedness. More specifically, the practice note outlines key principles and critical enablers to strengthen early warning and preparedness initiatives and build proactive capacity to strengthen resilience.
