As your healthy living coach, I'm here to share a quick and easy tip for boosting your veggie game: steaming! 🥦🥕 Steaming veggies is a fantastic way to retain their natural flavors, colors, and most importantly, their nutrients. Plus, it's super simple! Just follow these steps: 1️⃣ Grab your favorite veggies. Whether it's broccoli, carrots, or a medley of colorful goodness, the choice is yours! 2️⃣ Give them a quick rinse to remove any dirt or impurities. Clean eating starts with clean veggies, right? 3️⃣ Fill a pot with a SMALL amount of water and bring it to a gently steam. You don't want to drown those veggies, just give them a steamy sauna! 4️⃣ Place your veggies in a steamer basket or a colander that fits snugly over the pot. Cover it with a lid to trap the steam and let the magic happen. I like using a bamboo steamer or a Japanese ceramic steamer 5️⃣ Steam your veggies for about 4 minutes, or until they reach your desired level of tenderness. Remember, we want them to be crisp and vibrant, not mushy! 6️⃣ Once they're perfectly steamed, remove them from the heat and season to taste. A sprinkle of sea salt, a dash of lemon juice, or a drizzle of olive oil can take them to the next level. 7️⃣ Voila! Your steamed veggies are ready to be devoured. Enjoy them as a side dish, toss them into a salad, or get creative with your culinary creations. Steaming veggies is a fantastic way to nourish your body with all the goodness nature has to offer. I’m not Irish but I do Love Most Things Green! Spring is finally upon us… And I so adore this time of year! Everyday our landscape gifts us with more earthen treasure, as it becomes greener and lusher and so inviting to the imagination - especially, to those of us who garden. In my opinion, this is the most optimistic season. Even though we woke up to snow and below freezing temperatures, yet again, this morning in Southwestern Ontario, it is near certain we’ll be back to double digits very shortly. When it’s cold and unpleasant outside, it’s difficult to feel motivated. But somehow, psychologically, just knowing that we’ve arrived at the Vernal Equinox, I feel inspired to shake off Winter’s malaise and reinvigorate myself physically. Along with re-establishing my morning walks, I am also starting my day now with a healthy new shake that is supposed to have liver-cleansing properties. While I am neither a nutritionist nor a doctor, I can testify that I do generally feel better since starting this practice. But along with that, I am also doing my best to avoid alcohol, refined sugar and gluten. Another thing I’ve done is replaced my morning coffee with matcha green tea - which is what you see pictured here. Matcha has so many great health benefits: It is highly antioxidant, boosts brain function and helps with weight-loss. Studies also show it may prevent cancer and be good for the heart and liver. I drink one to two cups a day, being careful not to use overly hot water (80°C/176°F is optimal, otherwise the tea will scorch), sweeten with a little stevia and top with non-dairy creamer… Delicious! One thing we cannot do at midlife is take our health for granted. And just having a few good practices in place can make all the difference. I will also leave you with the recipe for my new breakfast shake - though I am sparing you a photograph (unless you specifically request it) because it really doesn’t look very appealing. But here’s the recipe, nonetheless: Liver Healing Breakfast Shake 1 peeled and sliced grapefruit 1 peeled and sliced lemon 1 inch wedge of ginger 1 clove garlic (which surprisingly doesn’t taste terrible, but I am no longer adding for hygienic reasons) Dash of cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp turmeric Tbsp extra virgin olive oil Tbsp ground flaxseed 1/2 Tbsp spirulina 1/2 cup water 2 packets stevia (optional sweetener) Put everything in a blender and mix until your desired consistency is reached. 12 best tips for Baltic winters When autumn is coming to an end and winter sets in the health issues crop up too demanding changes in food & life style. 1.Warm clothes and warm drinks are always to be preferred. 2.Cooking peas, potatoes, spinach can be more beneficial if cooked with spices &consumed while hot. This helps in multiple ways. 8. Mix 1 part of melted bee wax to ½ part of olive oil or any oil and apply to any part of the body which demands taking care of. 9. Asafoetida, (hing)a yellow spice originally from Iran is very popular in Indian cooking to take care of aches, pains & constipation. One can buy it in Indian shops. Or a combination of hing & other spices Hinguvastaka churna used as medicine can be best during this season. 10.Eating citrus fruits, limited pickles, hot teas can be helpful to combat up coming winter. 11.Raisins in diet can be your choice so also cinnamon. 12.Millets cooked with more vegetables, various beans & mild spices can make you healthy happy& free from winter woes.
