How Much Intern Doctors Will Earn After New Govt Deal

After a challenging 56-days of the doctors' strike in Kenya, yesterday I witnessed the signing ceremony of a Return to Work Formula (RTWF) ,paving way for doctors to resume work. This RTWF successfully addressed 18 out of the 19 issues raised, with the remaining matter concerning the posting of medical interns awaiting a court ruling in 60 days. In the meantime negotiations will still go on to address the issue of medical intern. This marks a significant step towards ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare delivery in Kenya. The main point of divergence lies in the salary for medical interns: the union advocates for an all-inclusive gross salary of Ksh 206,000 as per the 2017 CBA, while the government suggests following the SRC circular dated 13th of March with a gross salary of Ksh 70,000.Remember, this circular was issued during the strike something that is of concern. Notably, medical interns have historically received Ksh 206,000 since 2017, making the proposed reduction by 66% a key concern for the union as touching the salary of interns means violating the CBA which is a legally binding document. As negotiations continue, we await the court ruling, hoping for a favorable ruling.
