The latest BASIX changes that took effect on October 1, 2023, include significant updates aimed at boosting sustainability in new residential buildings. A major highlight is the introduction of the 7-star NatHERS rating requirement, which sets a higher standard for thermal performance. This means homes must be better insulated and designed to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures with less reliance on heating and cooling systems. In addition to the 7-star rating, there are stricter energy efficiency standards, updated water efficiency targets, and a stronger emphasis on renewable energy sources, such as solar power. LEED is a tangible framework and guidelines to reduce emissions and kickstart a building’s decarbonization efforts. The challenge with LEED is that a minimum of 40 points are required to be fully certified.
